Maybe you guys can give me a general rundown about this. I have searched the forums and google several times and yet to find what I am really looking for.
What are the biggest differences in the 89-93 and 94-97 cars? Obviously the 1.6 vs 1.8 engine, but if these cars look alike how would you be able to tell if a 89-93 had a 1.8 swap? Is that legal to have a stock 1.8 and all the other accessories swapped into an earlier year? How would you be able to tell the difference? Just a thought been running through my head recently

Only 2 major differences...motor and diff. Dashes are also slightly different. Looking at the motor there are 2 things that will catch your eye right away(in a stock motor). 1.6 cam angle sensor is on the back of the head on the passenger side. 1.8 is on the driver side. 1.6 has a air flow meter while the 1.8 has a Mass air flow sensor...once you see the 2 you'll never be confused. There are many other little differences but these are obvious. No swaps in SM other than what was original to the car(motor size and gen that is)

even easier way, 94-97 have a passenger side airbag, 90-93 does not.

Virtually everything on the motor is different:
Injectors
motor mount brackets
starter
alternator
heads
cams
pistons
manifolds
etc.

Other than some hardware, the only interchangable part would be the connecting rods. Same from 90-05

If someone really wanted to hide a swap, it would be difficult to detect. They do have vin numbers all over the place. In addition to engine stuff and dash, the suspension bracing is a bit different, there might be tell tale signs of the ECU relocation etc. If someone really wanted to do a swap and make it invisible, I'm sure it would be possible but they'd probably discover it would be half as much work to just get a NB tub and start over.

There are many cars that needed to be re-tubbed etc that have the "wrong" year tub. If you meet the requirements on VIN number to your spec line, you meet the requirements.

What about suspension pieces, like control arms, hubs/spindles, steering, axles, etc? Transmission? Brakes?

Are the parts interchangeable?
