As far as anonymity is concerned, the only reason I don't use my name is that I don't think its necessary to have anything I say on a forum publicly indexed to my name in perpetuity.
Privacy is a virtue. Not much of it left these days.
Not too hard to figure out who someone is if they give a valid region and car number.

Agreed. This is why I go by cnj. No secret, I simply dont have any need to have my private life open to Google search. With that said everyone in South West knows exactly who I am and I am happy to tell anyone else who wants to know.

I voted no and agree that the site should be open and transparent. My only complaint is that I think people should not be anonomous, especially if they are flaming away at someone. It's like writing a letter to the editor and not being willing to put a name to it. Just for instance, who is "high chair"? Also, the endless inclusion of unrelated videos (sorry AC) is annoying and a waste of time IMO. It doesn't add anything relevant to the post. And if you take the time to post something, at least make it readable. Again, sorry AC...just telling it like it is...regardless of how well you can motor.

I don't recall all this drama on the old site. Perhaps that previous suggestion about a separate forum for the SE makes absolute sense! We are a lot more laid back out West.

Bill-

Bill I use to post by my real name (Jamie Tucker) but do to my size many on this board have given me many different nick names. Knuckles (they said thats all they see when I drive) was the previous one. Sometimes I do forget that there are new people on this site that may not know who I am. However I do list my region and car number under the pictures of my cars. But your right I should make it more clear as my intention is not to stay anonymous.

Is just one ok?

I must have missed something... This is one of the more civil forums I frequent. Nothing wrong with disagreeing with others or having different opinions. I draw the line at name calling and insults.

I've struggled with that myself. A lot of the videos I post on my local forum contain contact or other things that might scare off the new guys. I decided that rather than try to put spin on anything, I'd just do my best to tell it like it is rather than sugar coat it or hide the blemishes. Figured that was the fairest way to do it if people are going to consider committing their time and money to SM.

Transparency instead of a nice facade if you know what I mean. Not saying it's better, just how I decided I wanted to play it.

This.

Plus, like Bill stated, require everyone to post under their real name. Another racing forum I frequent requires this and I do believe it helps keep things a bit more civil.

So what is to stop me from logging in as Hugh Jorgan and trolling? How do you know I really am Dstevens? Real names aren't the issue. More post deletions from malcontents and vacations for some of the offenders is really the only way it's going to work.

Seems like there's a role for both real names and more moderation -- mostly from a few posters. ;)

I voted no. On the old site the only thread that ever got searched over and over was one that we wrote on the best cheats we had ever seen.

Voted no. If the point is to not scare away new people, realize that catering to morons that post "because of this forum I'm reconsidering continuing (or getting into) SM" is futile. Those people don't have what it takes to race in SM if they are rattled by banter on a forum.

With rare exception, this board is as tame as I've seen. Get on a political board if you want to see some fireworks. I don't think the occasional slide into the gutter here is a problem at all. Voted no also.

On a firearms forum I sponsor/belong to, there is a "member's only" section.

It is used as a place for when things turn political, or anything we don't want exposed to google and guests.

I mean, it's not that hard to set up an account or anything, but it keeps "questionable" things out of the limelight.

As for requiring members to use their real names, I don't know about that. Kind of goes against traditional internet rules. I've always used my real name by my choice. This way people can come find me in the paddock, say hi, and have a cookie.

Same here: for most forums I use my real name (often times the nom de plume is to shield me from political backsplash) but it serves to improve conversation capability when meeting in person (or IRL if you must use a TLA).

Regarding that cookie - I'll be seeing you at NJMP this weekend...

I voted "no". As a "potential" SM racer, I have found this site to be very beneficial and motivating. From where I sit, I am not only evaluating SM as a class, but the different racing organizations as well. The open forum has helped, and I can assure you it has not deterred me at all.

Learning about the cars, and seeing some of the class issues only allows someone to go in with their eyes open and eliminate "some" surprises. Overall, I have been impressed with the SM community and without an open forum, that would not have been possible.

Thanks
