Loose is fast! :)

Also I was on BFG R1-S and they are really fast but the con is you always feel like your out of control :spin:

Those tires are the only reason I can compete with the 99's in STL with an intake put in and restrictor taken out!

yeah dude, scary fast.  I was just considering that's probably what you had setup for, but I run less than a mm of toe out in the front of my car and I feel a lot more confident than what I saw in the video.

I get this a lot!!

Miatas can run in STL in the following configurations..

Completely in SM trim and weight and run just like in SM.. For a 99, that is with plate and 2400 lbs..

STL trim which is 2560 and meet the STL rules

IT trim.. In IT trim the cars MUST be completely legal in IT, so for a 99 miata that is 2385 and NO power or depowered steering racks.. Must be true MANUAL or you are non compliant for the class and most IT guys know this.  Also 90/93 Miatas CA NOT run Torsen swaps and be legal in IT..

So if you see a 99 Up miata in STL it better have a plate and be 2400 lbs.. or have a manual steering gear which is about $600 from Mazda.

well, some guys might part out cars, but some guys have parted out 150 Miatas and only seen 3 manual racks :-x

The guy in the BMW protested me and I appealed it and lost probably cause the other guy is a lawyer and I'm just a 19 year old punk kid :) What they told me was that it is the passer's job to make sure they have a safe pass and the fact that I had to drop a wheel means it was an unsafe pass. I told them when I initially made the pass I wasn't planning on going off track I was forced off track.... They didn't see it that way.

I have a friend that was stationary in a sand trap and the Gehl crane (faildozer) backed over his car.  Stewards penalized him.  I assume because he was under the "we don't have to listen to shit you say if you're not 30 years old" clause.

you made the pass, you forced the issue............its on you.

the fact that you are new to the club, young, AND fast, is likely why you got protested; plus guys dont like having thier stuff damged for no reason.

my input from racing this track in formula fords(never in a SM) is that you gave up a lot by not attempting to get into the draft from the BMW on the exit of 9. i think you might have been able to make the pass into turn 1 using his draft, and avoided this altogether. i would have tested that first.

Your right I was trying to force the issue... I was hoping the BMW would see me forcing the issue and give me some room.  I don't think he even saw me.

What you don't see in the video is Clement Lee bump drafting me behind me as well as the 50mph winds.  That is why I was staying closer to the wall to try and break the wind... I probably should have tried the draft... I probably shoulda woulda coulda done a lot of things to prevent what happened.  But I will learn from it and move on!

Saw me or not he would have known I was there.  I have a warehouse of bumpers.

Everytime I read these "who's fault was it?" threads, there's a strong belief by many that you never have to watch your mirrors and yield to a faster car.  This is club racing for fun.  Sometimes, you have to give up.  Ironically, I think many incidents could be avoided if we actually got rid of "the lead car is always right" attitude, and supported a shared responsibility for overtaking/being overtaken.

I was given a  couple of great piece of advice from a former SM national champ...  Give up the fuc king corner and have the confidence you will get an oportunity to make a repass later.  further you have to have belief you can still win from 6th with 2 to go you dont have to lead to win, you just have to finish first at the stripe.

You can "think" it,  but it is not compliant :)  neither one the 1.8 diff in a 1.6, nor the power or depowered racks. IT is it's own animal, they like things they way they have  it and don't want SM cars coming into their sand box. If Sm cars come in, they want them to meet the rule.  While I may agree it 'should" be different, the class and committee do not want it different.  :noidea:

Not to have a thread within a thread, but we agree on the diff.   But unless I missed something power steering cars are legal in IT.

It is amazing the activity here.  Where do you guys find the time?  I can check once a day if I'm lucky, or late night.

I do learn stuff here (thanks all!)...  So the real manual rack I have in one of these 99 SM cars is rare?

I never understood the class politics (that's on purpose)...  Here in the midwest, we are just happy to have more racers at an event.  And frankly, since ST classes have more of a NASA flare, they are getting crossover racers too.  At any rate, it seems clear participation is welcome even if they are "not guaranteed to be competitive".

JJ - something is wrong with that Miata.  Maybe with the hubs, but the front hubs might cause a higher frequency shake.  Back hubs would could cause a lower frequency, except they rarely fail and that much play means they must be completely shot.

That car is wobbling even on the straight.  Extreme front toe could be making it dart, but that's usually under braking.

Another thing could be bent control arms on one corner...but the car's not crabbing...both sides messed up?

There are a lot smarter guys than me lurking on here, but something does not seem right on that car.

Mike, Willow Springs was very windy that day, even by the high desert standards.  Perhaps what you're seeing is JJ battling the winds.

Sorry Joey but this one is on you, Good move going under him, but dropping your tire into the rut and popping out was the mistake. I wouldnt call it unavoidable contact but just a racing incident, , skip to 1:50 for the proper way to "Run a Gutter" ;)

Finally a YouTube video that makes contextual sense.  Charbonneau could take a lesson. :)

On the topic of "you make the call", I've been working on a little project along these lines: http://RacingRoomTV.com

It's not quite done yet - SCCA (and hopefully NASA) stewards will be explaining how they view each incident and how they would rule to help us drivers know how the rules are applied.
