I think it would take a long time to get everyone even again and complaints would be worse next year for sure (Humpty Dumpty Syndrome)

This would be for 2015 the earliest, but the downside IMO outweighs the potential upside

but you're the one who brought it up !!!  You can't suggest a great idea and then shoot it down.

this is all very simple, why does this need to be so hard, Its AMERICA for God's sake...  Race whatever car you think is the best.  those that think their 1.6 is handycapped, sell it. and build or buy a 99.  IMO you can build or buy one for a difference of about 1k.  So what would stop anyone from doing it other than the pure pleasure of being able to blame their poor old car for their results???????  Oh and maybe the fact that some have degraded by word of mouth the value of their poor little 1.6 by constantly complaining about how handycrapped it is...

All things equal racing is fun but it also sucks that it takes so damn much money to be competitve, now if SM were a russian national class, where everyone would have the same exact car then it would be all about the driver and nobody could whine.  Communnists Rule!!!!!!!

Kyle, we had that scenario up until about 5-6 years ago, until a couple of JD's started tinkering with the class.  And they said it would be an underdog

Kyle, not trying to split hairs but your 1k comment is a little off base. I've built both and have sold both the number is more like 5k or more. To several racers this is the difference between the haves and have nots.

What we need is "government assistance".  Remember "Cash for Clunkers"?  All we need is a similar program for the 1.6’s!  :guinness:

Cost of donor difference is.roughly 1k imo... can buy used 1.6 racecar for more than 3k difference because all of the talk of how uncompetitive the car is... to me all else in the cars cost same no. Matter the year. I think to make top 1.6 would cost more as much more dyno and flow bench time is needed. Just my opinion... i have owned or.maintainted all but the 1.6, maintaining the 1.8 was harder for me then the 99 or 01.

For David Dewhurst, Pat Slattery and others that have asked, in the spirit of transparency, here is a dyno plot from my 1999, done fairly recently.

This graph will probably create more questions than answers. IMHO you should ignore the actual numbers, as this engine, in this car, on the same day, will easily get completely different numbers on different dynos.

This graph is from a DynaPack static wheel dyno, calibrated SAE (adapted), which is the way Tom Fowler dyno's all of OPM's cars. Most, and I say most, roller dynos' (DyoJet, Mustang etc) typically read a few HP/TQ more than this, but not all. These numbers correlate very closely to what Mike Rossini produces on his Dynojet. Numbers have everything to do with calibration and weather station.

This car with these numbers has been near the front of the national pack in 2013, so the curve should be indicative of what is out there. I have no doubt that there are cars out there with slightly more than I have.

In terms of hard numbers, I am aware of drivers that are quoting 130 - 135 HP but that only means that there dyno is reading high, and calibrated in some fashion other than SAE. I would suspect that there cars on our dyno would reveal reasonably similar numbers to ours (at least I hope so  :) )

Pat I hope this helps....

Oh and I guess I better get ready for the fall out

Danny, thank you, transparency and parity fit together very well.   After looking at 99 OEM numbers the torque and area under the curve  is no surprise.

A general comment, even tho I have quite different views on subjects does not mean I don’t agree with the two gentlemen quoted below. Spec Miata is THE class for drivers.  :toast:

Anyone that wants to be affiliated with one of the finest and most competitive racing families anywhere, regardless of their finishing position, should continue to be part of the SM field, with all of its spoken and unspoken benefits in the community, paddock and on the racetrack.

Spec Miata is a FRIKKIN AWESOME class. Yes there are a few unhappy people and we should try and make sure all are happy, but take a look at the photos guys, the wheel to wheel racing in Spec Miata is as good as it gets. Only SRF comes close.

I would buy a 99 if that no plate, low weight class was available.

What would it take to get that started?

Gulp!  Danny!  I didn't think anyone would have the chops to do it.  HATS OFF TO YOU!

Just as you said, DynoJet's yield higher hp/torque readings. By comparison, your curves are a little wavy, but the RPM and hp/tq numbers line up at the right spots.
