I really don't know much about Mazda differentials. Where can I get a good, cost effective one (for a beginner)?

1-800-700-9080 east street auto... you want a torsen 4:30 it will last and will still be good when you finially start racing.

+1 That is what I did. That is Mr. Drago's business. He seems to know a thing or two about these cars.

With your 97, you have a couple options(until you start racing). It is stock 4.1 open or Torsen LSD...identify which and run it! If it is open you will be dumping it when you're  ready to install a Torsen. If it is a Torsen, you want to find a open 4.3(99-05 and only legal ratio)and remove the open diff and install your torsen diff. If yours is open, as Kyle mention above, you will need the whole unit(4.3 torsen)to swap in. But until you are actually racing, you have a little time to make a decision...and save a few dollars  ;)

FYI...if you dont buy from a known source, be aware that in the 99-05 model cars, there are 4.1 and 3.9 diffs floating around(automatics and 6 speeds)...make sure you check before purchase!

Also, because you have a 1.8 car, you do not need to buy the diff housing (alluminum piece) or axles or driveshaft. You only need the pig (heavy steel chunk with the gears inside).

Or read my book, it is all explained there.
