You can download the software for free from AIM. Here: http://www.aim-sport...ad/software.htm

I am pretty sure it comes with some sample data. If not, I'm sure someone can provide you some sample data (myself included) so that you can play around with it. I run both the AIM Pista as well as the Traqmate and I find that I like the AIM data much more. I only run the Traqmate because I'm in Texas and most of the guys run that. I find myself using the AIM system when I am analyzing my own data, and just the Traqmate when I need to compare to someone elses.

How is the AIM Solo software? Is it the same software they use with their more expensive systems? I've used both Traqmate and Race Technology software. Is the AIM software comparible? Is there a demo copy? The system itself looks great, especially for the price. Being able to swap it to a different car quickly is also a major plus. I'm looking to buy a system this winter, and was leaning toward the Race Technology system, but the AIM Solo has got me thinking again.

Marc

Marc,

Regarding AiM Sports Race Studio 2 software, it is always free and has just been linked above so I wont do it again.  Yes it does come with sample data but if you want some Spec Miata data, let me know and I will send you some.

While I may be biased :-) I think we have the best data analysis software solution but clearly all of the different vendors software will do what you need, some just better that others! That is why it is great that all of them offer their software for free and you can try them out.

I have always believed that support as an 'added value' is very important to the typical data user. Being a Data Engineer is not a full time job for most and AiM has a full-time LearnFast support program available to you. I think a great start for you would be to take a few minutes to watch some of these videos we have produced on the AiM software:  http://vimeo.com/aimsports/videos and especially take a look at this Spec Miata specific AiM webinar: http://vimeo.com/32178690 and you will get some real clear ideas on how to use the software from basic to advanced data analysis.  Another webinar will be coming soon here at Mazdaracers.com that will add to that earlier webinar.

And finally I will again be on the road starting in January giving AiM Sports LearnFast data seminars and hopefully there will be one close to you!

Thanks to all. I will check out the demo software. One additional question. Has anyone looked into data compatibility between the systems? I know some of the systems require an additional license in order to export the data or at least export it at the full sampling rate.

Marc, all functions work in the AiM Race Studio 2 software and there will never be a software or firmware use or upgrade cost.

You asked one earlier that I missed... All hardware (Solo, EVO4, MXL, etc) use the exact same AiM Sports Race Studio 2 software and can be compared against each other without restriction.  Also, legacy data can be compared against brand new data. I recently compared 2001 data from a 125cc kart vs. 2013 Spec Miata data using Race Studio 2 software! Not much to learn there but he wanted to understand some things he was feeling!

Roger,

Thanks for all the info. I was also interested in data compatibility between systems from different companies. I'm sure each company has its own file format for the data, but do any of them allow for data export/import using a standarized file type? Something like a .csv file, even if it would have to be edited slightly to make it compatible.

I can only speak for AiM Sports Race Studio 2 (RS2) software. We do have a full export function of your gathered data to several different formats. Excel, Bosch LapSim (csv), Motec (csv), CSV, and TXT.

In Race Studio 2 you can export data based on a combination of any (or all) channels, any (or all) laps, based on distance or time (or both) with the ability to export different frequencies.

RS2 does not have a import process for importing data gathered outside of AiM Sports hardware.

For my money Aim offers not only offers the best choices of Data Loggers, but by far the best customer support and service anywhere

AIM, is a very nice system, but if those who will share data with you are on a different system I do not know of a way to make it worth while.  Maybe there is a way but I sure dont know it...

Cadell would probably know that answer...

This is exactly why I have a basic traqmate in my car, along with my AIM Pista.

No. While the AiM Sports Race Studio 2 software can export data into Excel, CSV, and TXT file formats, there is not an import function to allow the RS2 software to analyze data from other brands of data acquisition hardware.

The real question is when will the mythical MXL 2 be released?

The real answer is I don't know! :-)
Seriously though is I work mainly in the support and training side. I expect we will all know a lot more about new hardware after the upcoming PRI show. Sorry!

Yep pick whatever everyone else at the track has. On the East coast that's Traqmate, and my understanding is that the West coast is AIM. I have used both systems extensively, and both do the job. AIM has changed the game with the affordable Solo unit, and with Roger on the case you'll get all the support you'll need.

Now about that coaching gig....when do we get started :)

Full disclosure: SMAC chairman, my opinions do not reflect anything to do with the SMAC unless specifically stated.

Something pretty cool about the Solo that is better than other systems is the +/- predictive timing. It will automatically give you a + or - time based off your best lap to that point with pretty much constant updates. It is a very nice and easy to check into and out of corners to see how your driving.

Another option for the early cars is to get a regular SmartyCam. It will record the same data on it that a Solo DL has on the SD card and you can import it into RS2. You won't get the image quality of the SmartyCamHD, but you'll get the data and video at a very good price point (from the used market).

For data files, I have a bunch at www.trailbrake.net. There is a mix of Solo files and from an MXL Pista.

My suggestion would be to buy a EVO4 and install it in the car. As well as buy a Solo. Use the solo to get your friends data. This way it does not matter what anyone else is running. The Solo is self contained and has a magnetic mount. Drago has done many laps on track carrying my Solo with him ;) as well as many others. I would estimate that my Solo will make it on 4 different cars a weekend.

The more data samples you can get the better. You could take any of the top 5 and find areas that each driver is faster.

When it comes to SM data IMHO is so very important for the car and driver. So the more samples you have the more you will learn.

The first time Ralph had asked me a few weeks before the event and I forgot all about it. We thought tech had installed them on the car and just left it :) Ralph has gotten to the point where he doesnt even need to ask. My data is available for whoever wants it in most cases.

This is what makes SM great. What other racing has the fastest guys so willing to help. At ARRC this year, Danny Steyn was helping anyone who wanted his help with data ….etc
