My motor builder recommended I change out my fuel pump so I ordered a Denso which I thought was the OEM supplier. It came with a splice kit for a plug in connector and the base had a different configuration so the rubber retainer would not hold the pump in place. The local auto parts wholesaler sells a Chinese made pump which looks just like the OEM but it's Chinese made.

Are you guys just buying the pump from Mazda or is there a good replacement elsewhere?

TIA

Yeah, I like how the Denso, Bosch and others say "Direct-Fit" but are not. FWIW, the OE pump is a Mitsubishi UC-T30 made in China.

someone else can chime in but i think they have changed the rule that it is legal to buy a non OEM fuel pump in SM. In SM you must ask that question first as we are mostly only allowed to use OEM parts.

So i think you are ok, but confirm the above.

as far as changing the pump. i always change out the entire assembly. its not much of a savings to just buy the pump. its like 225.00 from Mazdaspeed. not cheap. You might just buy the part and have it on hand, you will know when the pump fails most of the time.

l. Fuel system
1. The fuel pump must be a Mazda or OEM equivalent part.

I was looking for  "or equivalent" but looks like Mazda is the only source.

I ended up buying the Beck Arnley 152-0899.  It stated OE on the BA site and the picture looked just like the OEM version.  I have yet to pull the old fuel pump, but I'll be cranky if is not a direct fit.  I looked at the Denso and Bosch, but the pictures clearly showed the need to build a harness, and physical differences in the pump itself.

I'll get a picture and post it tonight and y'all can tell me if I will be cranky, or not.

It didn't include a harness, so I hope it's plug and play.  Made in Japan.  I got it through Amazon for about $180

Glenn, you putting that in a '91 or a '99? It won't be plug & play for '99, don't know about the NAs.

It's for a 2002.  I guess I will be cranky.  Does it fit the NA cars?  If so, I have an NA fuel pump for sale for a good price!

Considering we are allowed to run an adjustable fuel pressure regulator, does it rally matter what fuel pump we run?  Don't they all do the same thing?

Its always about the rules. Again i thought it was changed, you do have to read the current rule but the rules require original Mazda parts, that is why you cannot use after market piston rings for example, don't the do the same thing? This was an issue at the runoffs this last year.

having said that, when it comes to things like alternators, temp sensors, cam sensors, i would rather that the Mazda stuff anyway and not trust the quality of some of the other after market stuff.

The 2014 GCR was changed to allow for OE equivalent fuel pumps. I don't know if NASA has officially adopted this yet.

The title was 1999/2000 fuel pump which matched Paul's 1999 engine.

I think folks were looking for a cheaper replacement option than OEM.

Ah, good point.

I think folks were looking for a cheaper replacement option than OEM.

and another good point.  I had to buy a fuel pump assembly for my 1.6.  Rather expensive.  Would have been nice to have a lower cost option.

Thanks.
