Fender liners are specifically addressed in NASAs rule set and are optional. A reroute of the snorkel is not a gray area. Removing the little black rubber thingy would be gray in my opinion but under the IIDSYCYC rule.

9.1.7. Spec Miata (SM) Specificationsg. The plastic trim on the hood may be removed.
Many times the GCR glossary sinks the ship. Trim, coverings or attachments whose function is solely cosmetic. The FSM part name is "headlight seal".
Removing the little black rubber thingy would be gray in my opinion but under the IIDSYCYC rule.
The little black rubber thingy is per the FSM called a "headlight seal", no gray involved, IIDSYCYC.

Head light and tail light coatings should be illegal, they add AERO advantages to the car, this not a gray area it is blatant cheating!
I have read articles that state that covering the headlights and tailights with special film can reduce lap times by .250-.500 per lap consistently.
I am ready to start my letter writing champagne already.
I am sure the fix is already in the change the rules to allow such cheats as only the fast guys are doing this cheat currently...

No, FSM name, headlight seal. 4 bolts attach each one to the bottom side of the hood.
You're slipping Dave...missed my point...never mind!

And where is the "trim" located on the hood?

I don't have a clue what "trim" is located on the hood, but it sure is not the little black rubber thingy the FSM calls a "headlight seal".

IIRC, the only other plastic on the hood are the clips that hold the washer lines and the washer nozzles themselves.
While I mostly agree with the mantra of IIDSYCYC, I think intent is pretty clear here. (in absence of other plastic on the hood itself, and seeing as how all the SM's at the time were NAs.)
Interesting tidbit from miata.net: "They are rain shields; the one on the driver's side protects the electrical connector of the AFM on 1990 - 1993 Miatas. The partial one on the passenger's side is for the electrical components over there. (I got this information from Norm Garrett back in 1990.) They are helpful mostly when the headlights are up."

I only read the rules and then have tangent/play time with them.
My wild a$$ guess with the tail light tape rule is, if anyone writes a letter for a change, they'll receive a Thank You For Your Input. One way or the other I could care less as long a the red glow of the tail light shines rearward.

So Bench you wouldn't DQ me for these lights even though I am blatantly cheating with them?

If that is how you read my comments then I guess I am blatantly cheating. But per your post you don't care as you are still able to see red brake lights.

You can remove any plastic trim from the hood you want! If just one of you would actually bother to open the book and READ THE RULES.....

I love how things go viral!
No DQ's, not even on the compliance list for weekend.
It was a friendly warning that it could/might/would be on future compliance list for ALL classes not just SM.
Compliance for this event was light due to heat of July. Impound all on Sat after qualifying to check RP, tires, SARRC series decals, SCCA decals and ballast bolts. Post race was weight, RP, manifold coating ( exterior only). No one stayed for a full 30 minutes. We released as soon as possible.
And yes, operating Steward spoke with me about cars laying back on starts and wisely, Sunday was much better than Sat. I was in the tower as a start judge for Sunday.
