I used miltary switches with built in circuit breakers and fabed a switch plate to mount next to the shifter. Again, a little pricey, and probably overkill, but they worked great.
Total cost was close to $800 per car, but even the old guys where able to see at night.

A solid yet simple to install & remove light bar is key... Then put a LED light on it any you'll think it daytime.

+1 on the HID kit (55w is great)

I use John's light bar and like it. Any gentle bumps won't bother the lights. I used 5 of the the Harbor Freight $10 100W lights, but the output is poor and they are pencil pattern which you don't want. For wiring, I disabled the headlight motors and unplugged the stock headlights and had 400W going through the highbeam circuit without problems. The 100W went through the marker light circuit IIRC. I bumped up the fuse on one of those two by 30% I think. Like everything else, do this at your own risk

On a budget I would go for a wider patterned halogen light and convert it to HID. Also, the O'Reilly HID kit isn't bad at all and conveniently packages all the HID stuff inside the light housing so all you gotta do is add 12V. I'll probably try some of those this season.
