:o   :o   :o  JUST PURE INSANITY!!!   :o  :o  :o

This weekend at NASA's June Jam event at Road Atlanta, in Lighting Race 2 they started SM as the first wave, Spec 944 as the 2nd wace and Spec E30 with their standing start as the 3rd wave.

I guess they hadn't fully thought it through. Imagine flying down blind through Road Atlanta's T12 WOT on your first lap and seeing the Spec E30s's just getting the green. THis led to some wild and crazy passing. Fortunately it all worked out but it could have ended really badly.

First two minutes is the start and first lap - boring - I suggest watching from 2:00 onwards!!!!

Only watched the first few minutes.. They are going to get someone hurt with that nonsense. Could have very easily turned out badly. ( looked like fun though ) :)

It's not often you get a bump draft from a car in another class!  That deserved 2 thumbs up.

Yep, that is the definition of insane, utterly senseless.  NASA SE events @ RAT are an exercise in crash avoidance, did their Aug 2014 event :shocking:

Only thing worse than the SE30's are the 944 Porsches.

There is nothing wrong with either of those classes, they should never be on the track with a group of spec miatas.  This is a NASA problem, not a Race Class problem!

This is why many of us choose the laid back approach of SCCA...

I would much rather race a group of 30SM cars then 6+ classes with speed differentials and different handling characteristics!  I dont buy into the talent quotent myself as there are plenty of that in SM as well.

That is a NASA thing. This past weekend at Mid Ohio NASA, we had a sell out in the lighting group. we had 21 SM's and a total of 60 cars of mixed classes, I was on the pole for SM and told that we were going to have two rolling starts and two standing starts. Thanks to Chris Williams who had done the mixed class starts to help me time it. It all went off ok, but Worked my ass off in the race catching out of class cars by lap 1.5.

It makes it interesting and the traffic is usually a deciding factor IMO.

In our case, they use to run three rung groups Lighting, Storm and Thunder, it may be time to return to that vs just two.

Forgot to mention - last lap from 18:12 onwards - there must have been oil on the track - got very loose in T3 and T4 (say what?) and then went completely sideways in T5 and had several moments through T6. Not sure who laid it down

Great driving, the video looked like a faster version of a Lemons race.  Glad it worked out for you but sure those SM's behind you were very frustrated with the traffic.

Fun to watch!  More than a few times things could have gone wrong if someone wasn't paying attention.  Folks have come down the hill at RA to find far worse things than a gaggle of BMWs just getting up to speed!

T5 near the end, steering input, hold it, HOLD IT A LITTLE LONGER!!! Great job. Doing the 313 car over and over because of his straight line suspension must of got kind of old.

Great run, Danny.  On Sunday, I was watching lap times live but remotely via RaceHero to check in on my nephew, Jake.

The traffic from lap one onward now explains the data.  Very frustrating situation, I'm sure, and I'm glad they didn't have more incidents.

BTW, you've got to love the old "point-by, pass-back, only to park-it-in-the-next-corner" mentality, don't you?  : )

Thank you for taking some time to share your thoughts and insight with Jake.  It meant a lot to him and to us as well.

As the 31 wasn't experiencing the same problems I suspect it was him that was laying down the slick.

No Michael,  it was the yellow Ford Focus that lost an engine and you see it parked at the exit of T7 on the last lap. The 313 BMW was dealing with it, its just that they get push, whereas we get loose. If  you watch the video from 18:30 onwards, you will see him come way off the gas going through the downhill esses, back the way off in T5 (which helped get me so sideways as I couldn't apply throttle) and then he backs way off in T6.

Regarding some of the other comments, I was actually enjoying my fight with the 313 BMW as I had quite a cushion on the 2nd place SM. I am just not sure that he was enjoying me all over his ass in the turns.

And Kevin, it was my pleasure helping Jake. The future of our class is in the young drivers coming up, so anything we can do to encourage them and help them go faster should be everyone's priority. Well up to a point. When they get as fast as Hille, then we are going to have to give them the "bad" data!!!  :optimist:

You can tell how much you LOVE racing, even though you had your class in hand you were still going at it the entire race with the BMW.  I did the same thing at this race last year, caught a BMW and we spent the rest of the race going at it.
