At a track that has little to no passing zones.. The club course takes another opportunity away. It will likely be the pro course and that is the right decision IMO.Is the club course ever used for pro events? Seems like a greater challenge, handling wise... i hope the club course is used for the runoffs.

Don't be so sure, the club course allows higher car counts and that is the motivation. I was told it will be the club course, but we are to far out and i do not think anything is final.
I will be advocating for the pro course just for the reasons Jim noted, running the pro is actually safer even though its higher density, due to allowing another pass zone and not a bottle neck in the bus stop. Also if the there should be rain or a wet track the bus stop is the last area to dry out.
So to the extent we have a say that is what i will say.

The 14-turn, 2.439-mile road course. It'll be different from the F1 and IndyCar configurations

So if it's going to be Pro course for the runoffs, should we expect regional/majors events to also be run on the pro course? I would think that racers would want to practice/prepare using the configuration that will be used at runoffs.

I believe they said that the Runoffs configuration will not be used by anyone until the Runoffs so that everyone will have the same opportunity of learning the course. Otherwise it would give an advantage to the local racers. Don't take this to the bank, as I am not 100% on this. The actual map will be released shortly.
I am talking Indy, not MidO here.

Then, if what I heard is correct, they won't run the Pro course at the Runoffs. I guess we will just have to wait and see what they have on tap. In the meantime, I am getting up for MidO, which owes me one from the last three (of 7) times I ran the Runoffs there.

since the ran the club course on saturday, i suppose they will only have one choice left to run the short course , I have actually run that course years ago.

I heard the same thing, I plan on going to the convention and Pontificate my opinion to those who will listen. I think that rule will not kick in in the 2016, so I am not sure last weekend would count.
However, I have a different view, the issue of safety should control, so we are going to have big fields at the regionals and at the Major there. It would make sense to me to run the SAME configuration now so that people can practice it and get used to it. Everyone who is interested in going will have the same opportunity to practice in the coming year. If you wreck your car before the runoffs, that is not productive either. Getting peoples mind wrapped around running in 50- 60 car run groups will take some time.
As far as the locals having an advantage i have 1000's of laps there it is what it is. Just like when the FLA guys had more laps than most at Daytona. Running, That train has left the station,

Every race at daytona in 2015 were all held on the runnoffs track configuration! SCCA shold just not allow an SCCA race at mid ohio at all till runnoffs if the goal is for nobody to practice that one turn that will be different depending on the coinfiguration. Road america ranthe same track that was used for multiple runnoffs didnt seem to bother anyone then???

I could argue that by not allowing practice of the ultimate configuration is a BENEFIT TO THE LOCALS As i have lots of laps there and my competitor will have none.
I actually see it as leveling the playing field.
OK never-mind lets leave as is.

Advantage in our sport is a non-starter. It cant be taken out of the equation...period.
But running the course that will be the SCCA Runoffs configuration allows SCCA to work out any bugs that may arise prior to the big show. Safety, flaggers, communication, track in, track out, start location, checkered location, grid, impound, podium, etc all need to be dialed BEFORE the Runoffs!

I would argue that no local is winning anyway! Run whatever course you want and several of us out of towners plan on kicking your asses regardless of the configuration
SCCA majors has run the club course and will likely continue to do so, the Runoffs has always been the Pro course and will likely continue as such. If anyone can't learn the pro or club course in one test day, they are a non factor anyway. It's Friday.. what can I say
