Rule

 

q. To facilitate frequent lifting of the vehicle without causing
damage, one piece of steel angle iron or square steel tubing
may be added under the rocker panel inboard of the factory
pinch weld flange on each side of the car. Angle iron and/or
square steel tubing dimensions shall not exceed 12” x 1” x 1”
x .125 thick. The added support shall be securely fastened to
the car and serve no other purpose.

 

Just wondering if anyone has done this and if they could post up some pictures of what they did.

I've done it for years...  I'll see if I can get you a picture...  its exactly what it says, just a jack point so you don't crush the pinch weld.....  We've just stitch welded ours in, in a couple of spots, nothing terribly sexy..

An easier solution is to rout a groove in a short piece of two by four and place it between the sill and jack.

FWIW I've never been concerned about bent pinch welds

Options:

If on asphalt or concrete, shouldn't be an issue jacking on the pinch weld. From my experiences it's soft material/grass or Mid Ohio Mud that is the real issue. Use a flat piece of 1/4 inch thick aluminum (or thicker plywood) under the jack. My cost effective process is plywood.

just welded a 10" long piece of 1" x 1" square tube to the back of pinch weld.  The square pipe is a little proud of the pinch weld.  Takes all the abuse, best part is that it lets the jack slip a little bit if it isn't at a 90 angle to the car.  I have also seen guys just bolt a 4 - 6" long piece of 1/2" thick aluminum bar to the back side of the pinch weld.

FWIW I've never been concerned about bent pinch welds

I have made my own jack plate with a notch for the pinch weld, but when on grass you cannot get the jack under it. so was thinking of going this way.

What's the tolerance on square? What if mine has rounded corners? Is there an expensive go/no-go gauge I can buy to ensure I'm legit? Can I angle the leading edge? So many questions...

Yup, and I did this even BEFORE there was a rule, shared it with other drivers who loved the idea, and will freely invite anyone to protest me...for my square tubing being  about 1/2 an inch outboard of where it should be.  Call me lazy but Im not going to move it for such a non performance rule.  If I were running up front at a nationals...well, maybe then...

Ok so 1st I meant to say choose.

It looks like you boxed in the pinch weld.

Why not weld one flat of the angle to the pinch weld and one to the floor?
You're doubling/strengthening the wall of the pinch weld. On the inside, behind the pinch weld.

Imagine you're looking at the ends of 2 angle pieces, up side down, so it looks like a "T"
One is the Angle you're adding and the other is the Pinch weld.
