Spec Boxster in PCA spec falls between T3 and T4. T3 is E2. T4 is E4. So logically the Spec Boxster should be E3, correct? You can't expect a Boxster to be competitive against 944 Supercup or SRF3.

The Spec Boxster is a tweener using this approach - it can reasonably fit in either E2 or E3.   No Spec Boxster has competed in previous 12 Hour events or any other SCCA event at NJMP.. Consequently,  little is known about their level of participation and prep level at PCA events. Therefore, a conservative approach was taken in assigning Spec Boxster to the E2 class.

BTW  The lap record for Spec Boxster is about 2.8 seconds faster than the T4 lap record.

My car got moved to e1 this year from e2. It was competitive in e2 won't be close in e1. That's why its not being put back together for the race.

What car were you running in E2?

Same thing happened to my car.  They bumped our s2000 to E1 against the Elgin guys.  We enjoyed the great E2 class last year and it seems now the class has been dissolved between E3 and some pushed to E1.    It's a shame.  Last years E2 race was freakin awesome.  There were something like 12+ entries.  We were 2 seconds off the leaders I think, but we were all battling in the long run so we didn't care.

We're trying to see if we can get down to the new E2 trim this week.  Not interested in running E1.  The organizers have a tough job no doubt.  I've been on rules committees for other clubs.  I know exactly what it takes to make things competitive and keep guys happy.   I was about to write to Terry about it, but then I just thought - you know what…  we'll just do our best with the new rules and not give him any grief.  There are a lot of other great things about this race in the rules package - no minimum stop times, open refueling, easy fuel cell capacity limit, 5 hours of night racing...

That being said, 5 classes is just too many for 40-60 entries, especially now with the race getting divided into a 7 hr and a 12 hr.  It seems they want to protect the SCCA classes from being beaten by the other orgs classes.  As Todd says… this is an SCCA race.

I do agree there seem to be too many groups, but I'd imagine it was based off feedback of competitors. Then again if it was up to me there'd only be 7-8 classes total in SCCA.

Are you interested in road racing enduros but

  • You can't find any shorter 2-4 hour enduros that used to be run?
  • You don't have enough drivers for a full 12 hour?
  • You mom wants you home by dark?
  • You can't afford a 12 Hour effort?

The South Jersey Region has your answer - The Devil during the Day 7 Hour endurance race. The region created this race as a companion to our traditional 12 Hour - The Devil in the Dark. It uses the same rules / procedures and will run concurrently with the 12 Hour, starting at the same time and finishing just before dark.

If you are interested in the endurance racing experience, check out The Devil during the Day ( Register ... Entry List)

I hope to see ya at The Devil

Terry

Race goes green at 11:55 this morning. Some great live in car coverage at racecast.me and on race monitor. Todd Lamb in #00 Mustang, defending overall winner and yours truly in #55. Lots of other SM regulars running. Should be fun! Qual was wet but majority of race should be dry.

We went old school and hired a photographer, not sure if anyone was there in a generic capacity.

Link to in-car video from the race (multiple cars).

For the first Elgin video, go to 1h6m to see the start of the race in the rain. Kicera (NP01) and I (302R) were on the front row for the start, with Mike Skeen in the green car that makes a very brief cameo in turn 1 on the first lap.

For those of you that have not watched Todd lapped all but the top 4 (5 including himself 😄) in the rain, in the first 10 laps! impressive!

For those of you that have not watched Todd lapped all but the top 4 (5 including himself ) in the rain, in the first 10 laps! impressive!

I qualified the NP01 up front on sticker slicks on a fairly damp track Friday night and we were quick.  It was soooooo painful to watch Todd go by lap after lap for the first 3/4 of my double stint.  The 1400lb NP01 in heavy rain on Toyo R1's was VERY sketchy.  Once the track was devoid of standing water in the race, the R1's heated up and we gained 15-20 seconds a lap on the field driving driving back up to P2 overall.  I have to admit, it felt good unlapping myself and passing the Radical like he was standing still...twice.

For anyone who hasn't done this race before it's certainly a MUST.  It was awesome hanging out with all the SM guys in bit of a different setting.  Looking forward to next year!

Mike Woeller was there and shot almost 1000 photos - http://www.windshado.../scca-ditd-2016

The Devil in the Dark 2016
is in the record book with 37 teams running around the clock on Saturday. The race started with an hour or so of rain to challenge to competitors and ended with 10+ hours of dry track. The race was very safe and relatively trouble free with nearly 30 cars running at the finish.

Special congratulations go out to the Elgin Racing team for their dominating flag to flag victory - the first time this feat has been accomplished. The class winners are:

E1 - Elgin Racing Boss 302R Ford - first overall with 406 laps
E2 - Meccanic Shop North / Autotechnic BMW328i with 378 laps
E3 - Tullman Walker RacingMazda Miata - ninth overall with 367 laps
E4 - Flatout Motorsports Mazda Miata - fourth overall 374 laps
E5 - Entropy Racing Sports R - sixteenth overall with 353 laps
P - Radical Canada Radical SR3 - second overall with 398 laps

We have already started planning the 2017 race - we expect next year's race to be on 29 April - Save the Date. We would like to see all the teams to return next year .... and bring a friend. If you missed The Devil this year start thinking about the 12 Hour next year.

See ya at the races

Terry
