Crystal ball question.

Does anyone see the Global MX-5 cars gaining popularity on a club level?

Are the initial costs too high? Can a grassroots team easily maintain & setup these cars?

It would be fun for club racers to have the opportunity to compete in the 'Pro series' when the series visits a local track.

Yes, I see this class gaining a lot of popularity, and I beleive that Mazda has this as an important agenda. I would anticipate that we will see Mazda putting its back into this car, that runs in T3 for club racing. I am aware of several drivers, who dont necessarily want to travel the entire pro-circuit who are currently contemplating purchases. They are intrigued by the prospect of the big show and will probably run limited local pro races, plus some local club races

We will be campaigning both the Spec Boxster and the Global Cup car in T3 at Majors next year. So yes I think there will be some club racing action. In fact there were several teams using club racing for testing this year.

How hard would it be to get a street car, read the rules, and build one or it has to be done/blessed/approved by LRR ?

To run in the pro series it has to be built by LRR. To build a knock off wouldn't be that hard to do, but I don't know that you'd be saving much money unless you did the work yourself.

The way the T3 rules are written, you can run the car in 100% Global trim (less tires) at 2370 pounds. Which requires purchase of a complete car from LRR. Or you can build to T3 specs at 2520 pounds. T3 specs do allow a few extras  choices on shocks, springs etc.

We ran ours only in T3 this year and the car should be competitive. We had virtually no competition, so I can not fully evaluate its competitiveness.

I was looking on the site and there really is no information on cost.

Does anyone have what the registration cost will be per event? I understand the cost can vary, transportation, track support etc. I am not looking for that cost.

I am just looking for cost per event as far as what is paid to SCCA, also tires cost? are you limited to how many tires you can use like World Challenge?

The cost last year was $500 per race ($1000 per weekend). You have to buy 2 sets of tires at the track ($2800 total). $300 for an annual car registration that includes all of the decals for the car (as many as you need throughout the year) and VP fuel at the track ($9 per gallon). For that you get 2 30 minute practice sessions, 30 minute qualifier, and 2 45 minutes races. Mazda Comp discounts the parts prices 20% instead of the normal 10%. The parts for the car are not that expensive but higher than getting used parts for an SM. Fenders are $100, door $400, etc. The cars are great but you have to be careful with them as they do not take a pounding like an NA or NB. When you hit something with a front wheel the wheel departs the car and you will be replacing a lot of stuff before you get on the track again. However, all and all they are a lot of fun and Long Road does a very good job building them. The SCCA pays back to 15th ($800).

Thank you, I also contacted SCCA and this is what they told me:

Below are the costs for the 2016 season that just ended. Costs for 2017 and 2018 may go up a bit but I’m not sure. As far as the other costs, I am not sure, as I only handle the license information.

·         Vehicle Registration: Full Season $250; Single Event $150

·         Event Entry: $998 for weekend

·         License fee: $300

·         Membership: $80 (Individual)

Thanks for the numbers Jamie. Pretty much what I had been told. And yes the contingency is great. Despite taking it very conservatively, I still got paid $2,100 for my first weekend (15th and 10th) which offsets some of the expenses

Both are in open top cars and the broomstick rule applies. Closed car it don't matter because tech pays no attention and that's why Drago has worn out part of his skull. Please note, I didn't say there is no 2 inch rule for closed top cars.
