Half Shaft Failure, New have not seen this before

Well, I dont have any expertise to hang my hat on other than I've had both inner and outer joints apart and understand how they work. The outer(wheel side)only articulates and does not move inboard or outboard once the snap ring of the axle is in place. The inner joint(diff side)articulates and moves inboard and outboard to allow axle to "dive" as the suspension goes through its motions. 

 

 

With that understanding...the air you speak of would only be critical on the inboard side. To create a pulling force on the outer CV joint(snap ring)the inner CV joint boot would need to be tightened with the axle in its shortest length. This way as the inner CV joint goes through its "dive" motion(lengthening)a vacuum would be created so the rubber boot is actually pulling on the axle shaft putting tension on the snap ring at the outer CV joint...potentially allowing it to pop out? Am I grasping the scenario you are suggesting with a "short shaft"?

 

Trust me...I'm not arguing...I'm trying to understand and effectively learn something new! BUT...assuming an un-compromised snap ring I see the rubber boot collapsing from the vacuum and stretching long before there is enough pressure to unseat the axle at the other side. I will gladly be set straight...
