In reading on the subject, it looks like the proper RPM for setting timing is 850. Is this correct? I also understand that jumping the thingy allows you to set the RPM (at the 850) so you can then accomplish the timing change. Right?

Once my car warms up and the idle settles, it settles in at 850 per the stock tach in the dash. After installing the MSM wheel, my timing mark bounces around 14-16. This without jumping the connector.

If I jump the connector, the RPM's rise to 1000 at idle.

So have I properly timed my car if its b/w 14-16 at 850 indicated on the tach without jumping the connector?

Anyone?

I would think the best way would be to set timing during a dyno session.

I'm not tuning right now, just trying to set it at the recommended 14-15 as my starting point.

set to 15 degree at 1000 rpm with your timing light!

Cool. I'll jump it tonite and recheck. If the mark bounces back and forth b/w 14 and 16, do you call that 15?
