99 Engine timing and advance

Ok, I did a search and could not find a thread on this which i got to believe exists. 

 

 

On a previous thread, I shared 3 of my 4 pulley bolts sheared.   Replacing them, I realized that my red timing disc had changed so I don't honestly know where it was before.  

 

So, I know the Dyno is the right answer but before i get to the dyno, what is the best practice on how to set the disc?  Do you need to put the jumper in the diagnostic box like the 1.6s?  Should I just use a OBD to pull the timing advance info?  What am I shooting for at idle and at 6500?  I will get it to the dyno eventually but need some ballpark guidance.

Thanks Bench.  But those articles lack the info i am seeking, they are basic info and install.

 

on 99, do you still need to use the "TEN" "GND" diagnostic jumper, given they do not have physical adjustable timing from the factory?    

 

Now that we have OBDII, what should those ranges be for a moderately aggressive race engine.  Do you read those w/ or w/o the "TEN" "GND" diagnostic.

 

My OBDII show 2-4 degree up to 34 degrees (holy smokes batman) at 6500.  But I recall that in a thread on this forum there was a discussion about the ECU adjusting the timing and that provide some 'acceptable range'.  

 

Anyway I hope that is clearer...

The jumper stabilizes the idle, I believe by stopping the ECU from constantly "hunting" for correct AFR. If checking at idle you also need to be certain that the RPM is per spec or it will read wrong. Doesn't take much. Shoot for 15-16 at idle before going to the dyno, that should get you close. Set it with a light, I don't think the ECU will recognize the additional timing (we are lying to it by slotting the wheel) so don't rely on that at the dyno. You can add a couple extra marks on the pulley each 10 degrees around clockwise then use the timing light to watch it during a pull. (Or in fixed RPM mode with Dynapacks). You will probably end up around 28-30 as the max value.

The timing wheel i get from drago, Is cut so that you turn it all the way to the right then tighten it down, its pre cut to give you the desired advance. No need to set it.

Steve, can you confirm this ^ info.

The Miata.net article mentions using the jumper at least three times. They may assume as I do that it is the same as the NA, I haven't checked. The important thing is a stable and correct idle RPM so the mark doesn't "jump around" more than necessary.

Ok, was away on the 4th.  A few things I have learned.  

 

Like the 1.6s, you are looking for ~14 advance at idle, as Bench's articles stated.  

 

Yes, you get different reading on the timing light if you have put the jumper in TEN and Ground.  I adjusted the timing plate/wheel with the jumper in.
