So, does anyone know the magic trick for installing the black lower shifter bushing that goes in the top of the turret without breaking it? I've been told by a local shop that it cannot be done and that one has to replace the turret case - is that true? The resourcefullness of this group tells me that there is another way. Is there a way to back out one of the locator pins to faciliate this?

Update: So, there's no way to swing a hammer and be able to remove and install the pin after changing the bushing while the transmission is in the car. The solution is to remove the four bolts that hold the bushing case together to the tailshaft housing. Then, use a vise or some such object to hold the case while driving the pin out.

Update part deux: There's a youtube video showing how to drive the pin back and forth. Evidently, doesn't require much effort. Here's the link, but fast forward towards the end for the demo: www.youtube.com/watch?v=biBjZhmkxZc (A shout out and thanks to the miata.net guys for directing me).

Now, riddle me this. I bought a bushing last weekend from a dealer Part no. Y601-17-492 (upper shifter ball bushing). It was supposed to go into my 99 6speed street car, per the dealer. Instead, when took the one on the car apart, it was the typical round type that's in the 5speeds too. So, what does it go to? This guy's ad on ebay suggests that these have all been updated (90-05) and this is the "new" part. http://cgi.ebay.com/...sQ5fAccessories

Notice how this one has these two wide notches. It is thicker overall than the original one that was on the shifter, but thinner where the two locating pins would be.

It seems to me that this part might work in our cars (legality notwitstanding). But the design suggests better reliability.

4/26/11 UPDATE: This other part number fits perfectly and limits some of the lateral slop you might otherwise get. And at $3.50 or so vs. $13 for the regular one, it's an easy choice. Not sure why there isn't a whole of information on it online, but it's definitely a newer part.
