Cutoff Switch Remote Pull

Posted by Tom Hampton , 10-04-2011 - - - - - - · 1,496 views

My birthday was a week ago, but the family just managed to get together this last weekend.  The two big shop presents?  A new shop stool, and a pair of 18V Lithium Ion batteries and a charger!  Sweet.http://www.tomhampton.info/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/P1010094_thumb.jpg   http://www.tomhampto...090_thumb.jpg   But...

Workshop re-organization

Posted by Tom Hampton , 10-01-2011 - - - - - - · 1,456 views

I took some time to rearrange the workshop.  The old layout was wasting a lot of space.  It worked well for woodworking, but didn’t really leave much room for the racecar.  It worked obviously, since I installed the roll cage in the old layout.  But, with the tablesaw and the WW workbench parallel there was only about 2 feet on either side of the car when...

Paint Prep

Posted by Tom Hampton , 09-25-2011 - - - - - - · 1,599 views

A friend is going to paint the car for me, but I’m doing as much of the prep work as I can.  That way he can just “spray&go”.But, before I got to sanding and such, I needed to reinforce the new mounting location of the driver’s rear view mirror.  I moved it to the A-pillar, but now it “flops around” while driving.    So, I took some 3/16″ steel plate...

Driver’s Rear Quarter Dent

Posted by Tom Hampton , 08-02-2011 - - - - - - · 8,262 views

When I bought the car, it had a dent in the rear drivers quarter panel…just behind the door.  The tough part is the fact that the area behind the quarter panel is not accessible…so you can’t hammer it back out from behind. http://www.tomhampto...192_thumb.jpg   http://www.tomhampto...2011/07/P101...

That was kind of stupid

Posted by Tom Hampton , 07-28-2011 - - - - - - · 1,336 views

My previous post was supposed to have a link to the complete entry on my blog, but I didn't get it when I cut and pasted the entry.  The post on my blog is quite a bit more lengthy, and contains 5 videos of the day, and my thoughts on progress thus far.  I've updated the original post, and I've included the link below.Anyway, here's the li...

Cool Shirt

Posted by Tom Hampton , 07-13-2011 - - - - - - · 1,275 views

Okay, so in the previous post I alluded to making my own cool shirt.  Well, I finally got around to it.I chose to make a 4-zone shirt like a real FAST shirt.  I don’t know if it is actually better, but conceptually it seems like it could be better having each unit of water only in contact with 1/4 of the total area.Continue reading Cool Shirt

Cool Suit Cooler

Okay, I’m not the first person to every do this.  Most of the prior credit goes to:http://www.ghidinelli.com/2011/02/28/diy-cool-shirt-system I’ve made a few tweaks of my own, though.  Namely, I added bulkhead fittings to the parts list in order to be able to run the plumbing from the trunk to the cockpit without leaving a penetration.  And a second set o...

Brake Failure

Posted by Tom Hampton , 06-13-2011 - - - - - - · 1,485 views

The brakes worked just fine throughout the day at ECR during all track sessions.  However, when getting ready to depart the paddock after packing up, the brakes started making a grinding noise.  The noise was exactly like that of a backing plate scraping along the rotor.  That’s actually what I expected to find….that the caliper had frozen on the pins and...
