Did someone protest Long or was the avoidable contact reported by the corner workers?

I am unaware of any protests being filed

Does anyone know if the driver of the #90 SM and the VW were Ok after the accident in the kink?

As far as I know, yes, both were OK.

Actually it would be completly legal. I can wear my tires out on th track, on the street or on a shaver. All are legal.

"Devil's Advocate"

9.3.45. TIRES
Tires shall be 124 (“U”) mph rated or better unless otherwise specified
or controlled.
In the Improved Touring, Super Touring, American Sedan, Showroom
Stock, Spec Miata and Touring categories, only DOT approved tires are
permitted. Racing, recapped, or re-grooved tires are not allowed. Tire size
GCR - 102
9. Cars and Equipment
is unrestricted unless otherwise stated. The only modifications allowed to
tires are having treads “shaved” or “trued.”

One could argue that the SM6 has no "treads" to be shaved, thus it isn't legal. Reference the whole "molded vs treaded" tire discussions etc. Of course if I wanted to shave my Hoosiers, I'd just reference their site where they list that they are "tread pattern 'E'". ;)

Naw, no one in the Spec Miata world would do something illegal, ask em. :duck:

Yep David we are all cheaters except you. You are 100% by the book legal. Not one thing on your car out I compliance. You could survive any weenie protest.

Cheater Ross

ps I didn't think the shaved HOHOs would be faster, I suspect the loss of tread makes the carcass too stiff

Contact patch != tread. Contact patch is the portion of a tire that touches the road. Tread is simply the pattern of rubber on a tire.

And yes I already pointed out that there is a tread "pattern", but that's clearly not what the intent of the rule is about. You're getting into the semantics of the word. IMO the rule is based on the connotation of the words and not the denotation. Obviously all tires are molded and have tread, but in the context of SM running on RA1s vs SM6s treaded vs molded has a different connotation.

Of course you cannot use rules based on "intent/spirit/connotations", but no one is going to bother to update the rules to say you can't shave a SM6 because you can't detect it; so it's pointless.

Sam (#90 SM) was paddocked with us - no injury other than maybe a bruise on an elbow - she rode back in the front seat of the ambulance. Car looked like it could be fixable (they were able to drive it into the trailer), as long as the initial impact didn't move the front end over much (VW lost it, came across the track and hit RF of the Miata). VW driver reported OK as well; both exited their cars on their own. Video from Sam's car is rather frightening.

We learned years ago that 'intent' means nothing.

That's not entirely true. It's used to further refine rules when people abuse the crap out of them. That's (one of the reasons) why the rule books are so long. See using a muffler as an aero device as a recent example. Obviously you cannot rule on intent per se, but then again my post said exactly that.

Why is dyslexia a gift?
Posted Image
Dyslexic people are highly creative, intuitive, and excel at three-dimensional problem solving and hands-on learning. Our visual and holistic learning style means that we learn best through the creative process, with methods that focus on mastery of the meanings of words and symbols.
The true gift of dyslexia is the gift of mastery. When we use learning methods that fit our thinking style, we can excel in academics and read and write efficiently.

The interesting point in all this is that Hoosier is vehemently against shaving a SM6.

Also don't the class rules take precedent over the general GCR rules? And the good ol standby, If it doesn't say it you can't do it.

C. Conflicts among or between portions of the GCR are handled as
follows:
1. The Category Rules take precedence over the General Technical
Specifications.
2. Specific class rules in the Category Section of the GCR shall
take precedence over the general Category Rules and the
General Technical Specifications.
3. Any item not addressed in the Category Rules is controlled by
the General Technical Specifications.
