We went through the marked tire exercise for the first time in WC this weekend.  I like the idea for SM and will submit a letter.  Might be worth noting that we were allowed to rotate tires to any position and add one unmarked tire between races.  This helps in the case of a flat tire, broken wheel, flat spot...whatever.

Could really get interesting if only one set of tires were allowed for the whole weekend  :duck:

This may be VERY time consuming? This may be something for majors races only? I can't see this being an issue in regional racing, so it would be a lot of time and effort for little gain.

Personally, I don't have an opinion either way, anything that costs less is usually good though.

Mikey, love the new profile picture :)

Jim is right...there was time involved for the stewards to stamp tires after qualifying, and the stamp can get rubbed off during the race, so a re-stamp would be needed (i.e..impound all) after each session.

I suggest that comments made here do not count for anything when it comes to any decision for SM tires.  If you have any comments, please post them to the crbscca.com comment page.  SCCA is reviewing the future of the SM spec tire and this is just part of the decision process.

thanks,

wheel

.

I am not ruining a good set of tires, just for a chance to switch to stickers.

We're off topic but what else is new.

Bench, Todd said go back, but nothing about shaving. B)

Sounds like it with a harder tire.

Rob, make sure you submit that comment to CRB for it to count. :goodvibes:

Regardless of what is done, the finishing order will not change! But if there is a simple way to manage the arms race this may help those who complain the most about it...for a day or 2 ;)

Don't you own a dyno?

Yes, not sure how a+b=c ?

Just so you can see in print how stupid what you are saying is...

You think that I am going to put on a $700 set of stickers( if I am dumb enough to try and ruin them intentionally, there is no way I wouldn't qualify on stickers)

The scenario would be:
I run new stickers in qualifying for 4-5 laps, then intentionally destroy them so that I could never using them again? ( cost of $140 per lap on tires alone). Then you are only "hoping" the CS allows you to substitute in new stickers, which I would never do if I was a steward, you would have to bring me used tires as replacements, but that is another story.
People who run stickers at multiple races use the tires again, it is not like they throw them away after the first session

The ONLY weekend in racing that I have run more than two sets of stickers in my life was at the Runoffs, I ran three. So you may know now me as well as you think. There is only ONE person in SM that would ever do that or even try that and he doesnt post here. :)

I wish new tires were that important to me right now (from a performance perspective).

Just a guess.  Don't you run like 3 events per year?  If my suggestion (1 set for whole weekend) went through, I wouldn't doubt for a minute that you would lock up all four on the cooldown lap of the race to have stickers for day 2 if it made a difference.

The steward will obey the rules on paper or lose on appeal.

My point with the dyno is you aren't shy about car prep.  Tires are just another part of prep.

I've run several karting enduros on rental karts.  The tire compound the rentals use is considerably harder than what the big boys run on their Rotax and shifters, who also sticker up for almost every session.  The entire field of karts runs shows virtually no change in lap time from the first hour through the 6th hour, and the racing is just as close as any SM race I've ever been in.  Surely there has to be something similar out there that would do the same for us.  I hope it is Hoosier that comes up with the answer, since the track support has been fantastic.  Unfortunately, my daughter's college fund is dwindling as I'm buying two sets of tires a weekend.  I haven't asked her, but I'm sure that's a sacrifice she's willing to make for daddy to be competitive at club racing.

I will be the first to ask for all the flat spotted tires.......    There has to be a way to shave them down!!!!!!!!!!!

what is your experience with the grand am Hoosier Todd? How does that compound differ? I have heard it is slower but lasts a lot longer? Is it faster as a sticker?

Who's going to manage all this at the track?  Out here at least, we run a volunteer program, and we're always short on volunteers.  It just seems like we're trying to play like we're F1, with a bottomless pit of money.  Just because we're the biggest class in SCCA (for now...) doesn't mean we should gobble up all their resources for programs that don't translate to the rest of the club.
