Jim, thanks for sharing your thoughts.  I agree with the general sentiment about avoiding weenie protests.

I'm sure 99.9% of SM racers don't care about painted intakes, but also sure that most of us want to have confidence in the rules process.  I'm not a black helicopter type guy, but when something is slipped in with no obvious reason, no explanation or prior discussion, it sends up red flags (even when there may be a valid explanation).

Perhaps we can just chalk this up as a lesson learned.

I protested a guy once....As*%&$@ was taking the last beer out of the cooler...Not cool dude, not cool.

When my driving, car prep and tires are up to the level of the guy out front, maybe then I'll start asking "why is he still faster"?  Until then, I'll just figure he's dirving better (Drennan, Hayes, Landy......List goes on and on.....), has the car preped better and has a set of SM 7's that are not 12 HC old. oh, and I'll say "Nice painted motor, mine looks like crap!".

Best advice of the day; Jim Drago " No idea. I try my best to put blinders on and worry about Jim and Jim's program" .

No idea. I try my best to put blinders on and worry about Jim and Jim's program. :)

How profound, I think there are many others doing just that, putting blinders on and worrying about Jim and Jim's program...

POST NUMBER 3:

This forces me to ask the question, who got caught with their intake manifold insulated???  :shame:

Sorry, I used the wrong word, the intake manifold was painted. There was an illegally painted intake manifold. Painted/insulated, same deal. The simple cure for this illegal paint/insulated intake would have been had the CRB rid themselves of the word weenie issue, many painted manifolds and multiple calls received about painted intake mainfolds thought processes and noted log books of illegal painted intake manifolds. End of subject and we would not have four pages on an illegal subject. The ONLY thing the CRB will do by allowing painted intake manifolds is open ANOTHER issue of unintended consequences/prohibited function. Next thing I'm going to do is insulate my entire intake track. YES, I know for fact that with my cone style air filter assembly the air temperature is reduced and when I insulate the remainder of the intrack please don't tell me cooler intake air is of no value. When someone wants to note my logbook or protest me, I'll make reference to president that has been set through this change of rule for the painted mainfold. I may even reference the 99 plus timming and the adjustable fuel pressure regulator. Any one see a trend with these ERRORS and OMISSION changes/rule changes because of illegal issues? Hey, I don't worry about Jim one bit, but I do worry about sliding rules more than a bit.

Jim Drago and Jim Wheeler along with all other CRB members, do the correct deal with this illegal painted intake manifold, do not allow anything be applied to the intake manifold as per the original IIDSYCDIYCan't (Edited for Johnny) rule. Let's follow the philosophy of folks learning how to read rules.......................

I understand the meaning and the intent. I even like the idea. I just think in practical life it will lead to problems. If this is made into a rule, it will have consequences. And I only see bad consequences. I want our starters to get the starts and the finishes correct (Road America, COTA, Sebring) and let the last lap be an unofficial finger, sign board etc.

Dave

What Dave said.... I fear the unintended consequences.

Keith, why video, let your imitation run wild.

Even tho the picture was completed by a talented photo artist, posting the photo crossed the site line.

Tom, please find your deleat key.

After reading some other points of view here and in letters, considered some of the unintended consequences.. Wheel and I ( along with the rest of the CRB) decided to pull the manifold deal and leave the original rule as written. It should come out in the next fastrak.

TYFYI :)

No bruises.. despite popular opinion.. we ( CRB) try to accommodate the membership as best we can and ALWAYS do what we feel is correct and best for the class and SCCA.  We have been wrong before, we will be wrong again.  None of us feel this is/was an issue, but not worth upsetting the apple cart over either.  If someone really feels strongly about allowing it, they can always send in a letter, but I can't see us changing our minds again.
