Didn't see anything as it was live, Carbonell won. My people at the track stated Danny Steyn set a track record.
New Track Record (2:15.917) for SM by Danny Steyn.
I don't know about Drago, but if you look at #7, they actually moved from 1 row in front to ahead of Jim. It looks like most all were on it, and the car in front of Jim was late.

Great job Tyler! What a way to come back from the last lap incident on saturday. Planet Miata's dyno tuning was a small part of the whole package to get you to the podium today. Now to pretty up the right side of #44....

What an awesome track in a really beautiful part of the country. We will be back next year for sure!
As far as my weekend went.. The rain on test day slowed the learning curve for me a bit. I don't remember qualifying 18 th or worse since 07 NASA champs I was on the wrong side of that one second split. The car was good, set up was good.. driver was actually preetty close, Just off a little and that is all it takes wehn the top 20 are within a second.
Race one.. I jumped start and penalty was deserved. They gave me a stop and go penalty. I really don't think I jumped it worse than most everyone else.. But I popped out and it was beyond obvious . I needed track time, so I just pushed as hard as i could after the stop and go.
Btw Tom Fowler kicked my ass I got up to eighth before stop and go.
Today's race.. Very intense at the start and first lap, Steve and Danny rubbing several times on the up hill esses with tire smoke two or three different times. I had all but convinced myself I was writing off the new car as I felt i was certaoinly center punching Danny or Steve after the impending spin that did not come. I pushed Danny clear of Steve, we went through bus stop with steve on my rr, Elivan to his right, no way we were all fitting. Steve turned down on Elivan and both spun off. I slotted in behind Alex who I bumped a few cornewrs later a little late while trying to work together, my fault!
I worked my way slowly to third and felt I had that position in the bank and no chance of catching Andrew and Dillon. However something went on with car, once in fresh clean air, my air fuel went to 9.6-10.2.. Not sure what happened.. But the pack gobbled me up as that is about 5-6 hp best guess.
All in all, the local guys here like nick, elivan, yiannis and others are really fast through many of these corners, laps and track time are huge here! With the speeds here and the lack of run off room, it takes a time to find the limit , If you miss a little here or get a little greedy, you are writing off the car. I prefer these types of tracks as I think it separates the drivers, unfortunately, this time it separated me in the wrong direction. :0 In short, you need as many laps as you can get here IMO.
I won both STL races which wrapped up the national points title which was pretty cool!
Great seeing everyone and putting faces with names that I have not met.

Had a productive weekend coaching a relative newcomer with Jim Locke. I previously had only been on the track in Rolex GT and Conti, but got the chance to drive it on the test day in SM. Sooo much fun, but like heading up the front straight at Road America, the esses at WGI are enough to decelerate a Miata.
It was interesting to see how much difference no wind vs. strong tailwind made in speed heading into the inner loop.
I was hoping to see an exciting race, perhaps a 10 car battle up front, but it didn't seem like anyone was able to consistently make the most of the grip besides the two front runners. Would have been fun to be in the mix but it will have to wait until Runoffs.
Congrats to Jim for the STL title, and more importantly congrats to the STL group for not having "the big one" for once.
Good seeing everyone!

The weekend was great. Got to see lots of friends from all over the country. It was very cool to race with some of the fastest guys in the country. It was to nice to know my car was just as fast as many of their cars...the driver could use some more seat time. I got a great start on Saturday I went from 21st to as high as 14th. Thats right about the time we ran out of gas. I should have drained the tank down but didn't. I trusted the scales and they were off. I made it to the end getting passed every lap exiting almost every corner. Sunday I got an even better start and made it from 24th to 13th and with 3 laps to go it started to get rough. I pulled off and parked it. I could not believe the bump and run, dive bomb, chop with contact that people were willing to do for maybe a shot at a top 10.... Otherwise it was great weather and good times!!!!
PS - The highlight of the weekend for me was watching the Sunday T4 (AARP) race. My Dad qualified in P3 but P4 was very close in the mixed grid. The same car edged him out the day before by getting him on the restart. P2 to was a no-show so my Dad was 2nd right out of the gate and gapped P3 and got off to a good start. Once again they had a full course yellow and the third place car caught back up and once again capitalized on the restart and ran my dad down. With 2 laps to go, P1 broke and all of the sudden my Dad was racing for the win. He managed to get up to his door by start finish but the Acura just had more HP than my my Dads MX5... The podium ceremony for them was great. We watched all the other groups get up there and spray champaign and then the old guys.. P1 - 82 years old, P2 - 64 years old (my dad), P3 - 75 years old.... they got the champaign bottles held them up, shook hands and kept them, told everyone they weren't going to waste it and that they would drink it later

Didn't know your Dad was a racer, Mike. Did he bring you into the sport or vice versa?
I bought him in to the sport. He had been around it for a long time occasionally crewing for friends in his youth, he's always been a car guy. I grew up helping him build classic corvettes for show. When I got into it ( at 35, he was 55) he decided he was going to be my Crew Chief.... He would watch the Miata races and practices and tell me on the radio to "stand on it"..." pull out and pass him"... At the end of the first year I gave him my race car (i built from an 8.5x11 piece of paper that were the SM rules at the time), I knew I needed a new one... I Crew Chiefed for him at Drivers school and he quickly learned that a Miata was not a Corvette and that when he was telling me to "stand on it", I had been on the gas already for a very long time and that was all it had...
Most people don't know its my dad unless you've been around awhile. I'm almost a foot taller than him and he has a baby face and no gray hair. Over the door his name on the car says "Junior"....its not because his dad was a "Sr."... Its because he tries to pass himself off as my little brother.... He likes to think he's "MEATHEAD Junior"...
