To finish my thought, did SCCA want a engine builder fully up to speed on their side/in their pocket to examine parts if needed.
I agree with the scholarship statement but maybe it was for a reason.

This is a hobby.
The question I have, after reading Dave and Jim throw out amounts on what it take to compete, is do we want SM to be dominated by the few teams that have 6-figure annual budgets?
Are there ways/rules that can slow/prevent wallet racing in SM?
Give 1 year suspensions to the winners. That ought to level the field pretty quick.
Answers to Walters statement.
Yes it is.
There's a lot more than a few.
It's called SSM, if you didn't know about and should go check it out, try it for one season.

Weird, I figured a jackass that cuts and pastes every announcement from the SCCA would have known that the Great Lakes Division doesn't really have an SSM program.
If they had even half the interest as MARRS I'd be there in a heartbeat.
It all starts with one, somebody has to do it. talk to others, write the letters.
Maybe campaigning for that would make you more happy.
I think we spoke (PM'd) about that a while back but you're still at parity huh ?
You'd think a class that spends money on entries fees and not the car would be welcomed by the clubs, hmmm.
Please don't hurt the animals.
carry on,
J~
Like I said make it two classes in one run group and score them separately and be done with parity issues. You run the group as normal where you qualify is where you start and score them separately. Leave the rules as they are. This saves everybody money and a lot of R&D time.
This will bring the price of all those NA cars up and bring them out of storage for guys to sell and won't feel like there giving them away for free. And don't worry sm builders you stand to make some money off of doing this because the new guys would like those old SM's freshen up.
THIS WONT COST ANYONE ANYTHING and the parity problem is solved !
I have no problem with that ? But do you think guys would want to race that way? I guess guys could sign up SM2 or sm when entering?

But the question remains, can other regions get critical mass?
Already has. SSM came in 12th ? About every event is like this in SFR (SCCA)

We DO NOT need to fracture this class and come up with multiple classes based on cars that are relatively equal.
I had a chance, thanks to Meathead, to run the SSM race at Summit Point last weekend. It's a class I can get behind, because it is fun, competitive, less expensive, runs tires that last forever, and has "sealed engines" (still relies on the honor system, but I digress). Going that route still allows relatively inexpensive cars a la "the good old days", and IMO does not fracture the class like a split 1.6/1.8 field would. SSM as a regional class for 1.6's makes sense if it is implemented like MARRS has done. But the question remains, can other regions get critical mass?
SSM last weekend 40 entries. SM 20 you tell me which one the regional racers want....
I can't see why anyone wouldn't want to do it this way !
Think of it this way, I'm a new guy and want to join this class now I go out and buy a starter car (NA) for 10-15k and get some seat time. Then I start getting faster and want to try a majors. Now I have fun running a major with all the fast guys and start to finish on the podium for the NA class (sm or sm2) and finishing in the top 15 of the whole group. Now I want to try to get to the front of the group so I sell my NA and upgrade to a NB. Everyone makes money and the new guy still gets started cheap and can have a goal without feeling like there just going to waist there money if they buy a NA.
Running the same cars for a $5 trophy would piss me off if I was a 1.6 guy? I would throw that trophy at you
If that is what this is all about.. I will gladly buy three trophies for every majors race next year, we can have a NA podium recognized here. I really doubt that is what people want?

The way I suggested the NA cars can still run with the whole group whether it be a Majors or a Regional at no cost to anyone. All MARRS did was add a whole separate class and whole separate set of rules.
It's a separate CLASS, so yes it has separate rules. These are not competitive SM's - they are purpose built SSM cars and/or retired low budget 1.6's.
Splitting up all the currently competitive SM's would be fracturing the class. This includes the well prepped 1.6's that still compete in SM.
You have two very distinct classes: SSM for regional low budget racing. SM as it exists today on a national level.

Ah, pushing buttons.
If a Scott Tucker type person came into SCCA Spec Miata and did the same as he did with SCCA DSR, the howling would be interesting.
So do we have 15-20 people weighing in on this topic here? Getting easier to understand why 536 (537 if you count Biden) elected officials in Washington can't get a damn thing done and what does get done sucks.

I didn't know there was any confusion about that.
PS: I don't count Biden.
