I also use a 08 Tundra 5.7 as a DD/tow vehicle with a 20' Cargo Mate trailer. Fully loaded it drives great and is very comfortable. Bought the Tundra used at CarMax for about $8k under blue book.

What are you all using for a brake controller?

I've got an 07 Tundra that I daily and have a 20' enclosed on order that I am picking up in April. I just installed a Prodigy P3 over the weekend although havent tried it out yet. Easy install, put it between the 2 power outlets in the center console.

With the new truck the brake controller is built in, but in the old diesel I used the Tekonsha Prodigy. Several people have recommended this particular brake controller, and I had no issues with it whatsoever:

Valley Odyssey II (p/n 32810) with excellent results...though it may have been discontinued.

The Prodigy line is the shizzle. These guys have them at a good price, free shipping and the complete dash harness for your model truck.

My Prodigy 2 arrived the other day. Just installed it (ash tray location), wow too easy! Thanks again for the advice.

One thing to really double-check on is local laws on trailers & their requirements.

For example in NJ, with a double-axle trailer rated to haul over a certain amount (I think in NJ it's 2k pounds) it legally must have trailer brakes.

Whether they are surge style (momentum of trailer pushes it towards tow vehicle and compresses a master cylinder to engage the brakes) or an electronic controller integrated into the vehicle to actuate the trailer brakes (whether electrical or hydraulic), there must be something to assume the braking duty of the trailer's weight.

Buy a vehicle with the towing package included from the factory, you'll be glad you did (easily install controller, uprated coolers, usually a Class IV receiver...)
