Jim if that was the case, could officials make eveyone flip the kill switch on grid? The real kill switch.

Lot of what ifs and buts... first if what I said is even true, second we probably could...

If I was using that computer and this was true, my kill switch would not cut power to the ECU. But I bet I would have another way to cut the power just after the race.

I am ordering one of these for one of my favorite posters :)

Yes, and all of the Miata computers can be reprogrammed. The statement made was that the 99s gain more benefit, which is what I'm challenging.

The 99 has the lowest stock rev limiter. One earlier this year reportedly reved up to about 7400. It was a MONSTER. After crushing some of the fastest drivers/cars on the left coast in a nationals race, there was much discussion in impound. The next day the car was much slower...and up for sale.

Ok, and the 1.6L computer can't be flashed to rev to 8000rpm? Would it not breathe better than the 99 up there because there is no restrictor plate? :)

How about disconnect the battery on pre grid.

The 94/97 revs the lowest at 6900 BTW.. Before someone crucifies us :) It too can rev to 8000 with a flashed ECU

You can tell how much us NA owners know about '99s. One thing everyone knew for sure was that car wasn't right. :shame:

Ecu's, have to be eliminated from the equation, how to do that is another matter. I have asked around, and over and over have been told that there is nothing that can be done to the 1.6, except to swap around a few and find the best.

Wouldn't that be the same answer a 99 owner would get if asking about what can be done legally? Or you were asking for a cheater ecu and nobody could help you?

The guy in the leading 1.6 says

If I had the resources, I would have a 99 car

Doesn't that kinda say it all?

Mueller...what am I gonna do with you? If I had Jim's car or Chip's car then yes your rules are very close!

Can you send me some of that Cali Kush your on? I need some! :bash:

Kyle,
I was at NASA Nationals and I am pretty sure that a '99 car (driven by Alex Bolanos) had the fastest lap of the week. If you look at how '99s registered versus how many were in the top 10 (Price and Bolanos, as well as Whitis and Molaver before getting crashed out), the cars seem equal in my book.

Also, you spent a LOT of money on a car over the winter not because it was EQUAL but because you thought it was the best car for the class...unfortunately, NASA changed the rules!

My recommendation is that we stop the madness of rule changes so that when someone buys or builds a car, they know exactly what they are getting, and get it for more than 1 year!

Are you saying that you want to continue to change the rules every year so that you have the best car maybe 1 year every 3 years??? If the '99s complain enough to get a rule change, some other group will complain enough to get a rule change the following year...and some of us may find a new class to race in so you will have a very competitive car in a class of 10!

What attracted me to the class were regional events of 30 cars and national events with 60...everyone should be asking why that is changing...

Good luck with your rule campaign!

keith i know you are being sarcastic.

however, I am not being sarcastic in my post.

i think we should just officially change the name from SM( spec miata) to SM being Similar Miata; and all stop whining.
I think the truth that i have realized, is that in racing, just like in life, there is never going to be the parity that people expect.
its just the way life is, some people work harder, some are smarter, and some just have the good looks that get them ahead of the rest.

how about we just accept that fact.

life is not "fair" and those who work harder or smarter than others get the rewards for their efforts.

I like it this way.
look at sports for kids where they dont keep score so nobody feels bad when they loose, AND they all go home with a trophy.

the rules are fine, stop changing them, and if you want to be on the podium, try spending less time bitching on the internet, and more time in the garage finding ways to exploit the rules in your favor(not cheating).

the effort some guys put into their cars off the track seems to be huge. I know that many races are lost before a car is even unloaded from the trailer (car prep, or lack thereof)

there will ALWAYS be someone faster, with more $ or a hotter wife.

i am convinced that the parity is a good as it can ever be expected with 4 generations of cars, and that parity at the runoffs will never happen as long as the runoffs is at a track like road america.

rules stabilty is what will bring in drivers or keep drivers away.

THE END

AMEN!

I appologize if my sarcasm came across mean spirited or anything like that. It's fun to stir the fire once in a while and watch the flames shoot out. The tire discussion has wound itself down for a bit and I enjoy the entertainment.

I was chuckling to myself earlier about the question that comes up all the time: "What's the best year to own?" and thinking it's a deeply personal question that fundamentally depends on what side of the arguements you'd like to be on when it comes to armchair racing in the silly season.

The 1.6 owner gets to complain about the arms race but gets the satisfaction when they wheel the doors of the overdog in the '99. The '99 owner gets the satisfaction that lots of data has shown that parity is pretty close so step up your prep or step up your driving. There's the RA vs. other tracks thing. Old school vs. new school. East coast vs. west coast. Split the class or level the playing field...

I'm a 1.8 owner. Mine isn't the top level of prep. I'm not a runoffs level driver. It's not the overdog or underdog anywhere but it's not a bad car. I frequently race people roughly my ability in faster cars, and have a lot of fun. Sometimes they beat me, and sometimes I beat them. If I was a bit faster or pouring tons of money into my car I'd probably care more, but I'm not so I get to sit on the sidelines during the debates and when the fire dies down, I poke it again and see if it sparks back to life.

If the 99 folks could work in the gray area & get their gray area stuff made legal why can't the 1.6er's? You know, goose & gander $hit. :soapbox: There may be no power there but there also wouldn't be a bunch of hesitation  & wasted time shifting  at some corners.

Upgrade Your Stock ECU And GO FASTER!!!
Miata and all other stock ECU race cars built in the year 2000 or earlier can benefit from increasing the rev limit by 500 rpm and up. Whether it is to gain a few horsepower, avoid needless shifting at the end of a straight away or to keep up with your competitors who have already done this simple modification to their ECU’s. This modification...

James, I have asked, JD for that matter, and he advised me that it can't be done on a 1.6 atleast not any significant gains. It is a OBD0/1 and it can't be flashed. Are you telling me your 99 can't be flashed? Right now we have no ECU rule, period. They can't be teched, they pretty much admitted that in the Town Hall Meeting. So if a 99 can be tampered with and the 1.6 can't than who has the car that can gain the most thru the ECU?

If you can't tech it than lets open it to all cars to use whatever.
