While I'll concede that taping over decals on a car is not that big a deal, I think having to put duct tape over a patch on a driver's suit is just ridiculous. I mean really. . .who's gonna see it? And who really cares if they do? Are guys gonna leave to race in the other region just because you have a patch on your suit? There's just no logic to it. Besides, there's no Bernie Ecclestone in amateur racing. Or is there. . . . ?

I always thought taping over the other sanctioning bodies decals was kinda pissy and infantile myself.

So what if I race both series if I'm here this weekend...get over your bad ass self!

It's all about fostering good business relationships, growing cooperate involvement (more $) and honoring business contracts. Think bigger guys!
  • True there is no Ecclestone ~ But the funds contributed by the tire mfgs probably go toward keeping entry fees a tad lower than what they could be.
  • True there is little media coverage at most of our events ~ But any photo published (ie. facebook, forums) containing 'both' tire mfgs or organizations is a branding nightmare for marketing folks.
  • And those marketing folks are the charged with finding corporations that want to support & sponsor club racing with the goal of growing it.
  • Which also keeps costs in check so we can afford to keep buying their product (entry fees).
See, it's all related and impacts our personal racing budgets.

Never really thought of it that way -- I guess there is some logic to it after all. Having said that, I still don't like it :spin:

htron it could be worse....last year I did a grand am test day (and then like every other racer with a dream, the money side of things fell apart).

Just on an official test day, they made me put on the series patches and cover the scca and nasa patches....and threatened to fine me an obscene amount of money if I didn't.

I see where the tire companies and racing organizations are coming from. They have their images to protect.

Before everyone jumps to the assumption that Hoosier does not offer contingencies to regional racers, you should contact your local Hoosier distributor. There is a Hoosier Tire Regional Contingency program offered in the SCCA Great Lakes, Central and Mid-West Divisions by our regional Hoosier distributor. This program is offered to all classes running regional events. Payouts are based on finishing place, number of starters in the class, and are in the form of discounts on purchase of future tires. And one of their requirements are no competing decals. I'm happy to support the products I use.

Hoosier's NASA 2011 'open tire' class Contingency program, it paid tires only to the top 3 spots.

It would be interesting to do a poll and see which racers would rather have the 2012 Hoosier contingency and have the same tire for SCCA/NASA or who prefer the deeper contingency of Toyo. (Might need separate polls or disclaimers for those who only run SCCA/NASA since that could skew the results.)

Personally I'd rather that we be on the same molded tire everywhere, BFG if I had a choice, over a bit more contingency.
