$650 is a lot for one race, actually too much, for my pay grade.

Looking at the entry list... SCCA is lucky to have all the Miata guys cause Scca couldn't afford to rent a track if it weren't for our class. All the other classes have 5-10 cars then we have 85 haha. Hope they realize that.
SM is definitely more popular than almost all other classes, but once registration is known about by the larger community I think you'll see the numbers come up. Expect at least 60 SRFs, I'd guess 30+ FE, FV, FM, SR1s (Or whatever they're called now), and plenty of non-SM door slammers. SM guys had the inside line for the aborted registration snafu, so the numbers are a bit tilted.

I think Sebring was 500-550Since S. F. brought money up, I'm really interested. Are all Majors entry fees going to be in the range of this event. No way I can make COTA but I'm entertaining the idea of attending the Major at MIS.

Another option that may be considered is to drop the 2nd race qual and go with fast lap time of first race for grid order of 2nd race(yes to be fair you would need a few potential situations spelled out ahead of time). Put the time back into longer races! We did this on a 2 day weekend...and this was decided by the group if I remember correctly.
One of the grips I hear from guys who cross or have run NASA is the shorter quals and races...lets not ruin one of the few upsides to running SCCA...longer races! That's not a dig on NASA btw...just pointing out a fact! Both Orgs have their strong and weak points.

I'm not in the position to say what regions are going to choose to charge for majors. However COTA track costs are a multiple of most tracks in the country and so this is driving registration costs for that one event. Other Texas event registration costs are somewhat lower.
One thing that I have noted which is problematic for the COTA weekend is the scheduling of STL in group 2 immediately after SM in group 1. There will be a decent number of SM drivers who will race both and a 5 minute gap won't get the job done. The track layout/paddock is not one which allows cars to get on and off the track, gassed back up and then back on again in grid order easily. Not to mention that allowing a break for drivers promotes safety.
I hope the officials will consider changing the schedule. Just one more thing that is concerning.

COTA is like $70,000 for the 3 days -- I think most of the other tracks we run in the SouthWest Div are like $20K
On the assumption that Bill is correct on the $70,000 for the track, and a further assumption that the region's other incidental costs for hosting a party, worker meals, registration supplies, sanctioning, insurance, ambulances and wreckers if they are not part of the track rental, etc is another $50,000, that says the expenses might be $120,000 to the region.
On the income side, if every race group is fully subscribed at 85, the income would be $386,750. Now I don't expect every race group to be fully subscribed, but let's assume it is the same car count as the first Majors at Sebring, which I believe was about 330. At that level the income would be $214,500, still resulting in good revenue to the region. Not knowing if the garages are already a part of the rental fee, there is certainly the possibility of additional income if they are part of the $70,000.
Capitalism at its best.

The Lone Star region's track costs and break-even point are much higher than you've calculated Jerry. I won't disseminate un-authorized information here, but a VERY well-subscribed race is needed, despite the registration snafu. The Lone Star is a small region and took on some big risk to make this event possible for SCCA racers.
Taking a risk in hopes of a gain...now THAT's capitalism...
