Looks like us Mazda 2 drivers are getting an extra 100lbs just in time for the runoffs....

Scroll down to the last page

We picked up 50 lbs in July...

Good grief, that's heavier than a Spec Miata. Has the Mazda2 been that much of an overdog to warrant adding 100 lbs of dead weight?

It appears someone is.  I am betting it is the WC Mazda 2s winning which triggered this.

I wasnt able to match the pace of the fits to few times I have raced against them so this is really going to be a challenge at the runoffs.

That's what one non-compliant car does to the whole lot. At least that's the view shared by many...

I think I would be ok with an extra 50 lbs, 100 seems like a lot.  I have picked up a passenger in weight when you add in the 50 from july, lol

This is going to be fun adding that much ballst to the car.  I am looking at some 2 inch thick steel plate.

The car passed a full engine tear down...  hard to call it non compliant?

Well only if you have no issue with me( or any past champion) borrowing the Jr's Maz2 and using my champions exemption and racing it in Mazda 2 less the 100 lbs at the Runoffs? When they win against people who have raced all year, should we slow it then? Seems unfair to all the other competitors and I am a die hard Mazda guy.  This was done by crunching lots of data, not just we need to slow the Mazda2 for no reason. The car was torn down completely and found to be compliant. So that seems like a good example of what a Mazda 2 can do. Again, you make the rules to what the best version of the car can do, not the middle.  Most of the Bspec guys have not even maxed the specs in the engines.

Fair enough, if it's not even, of each best version of car, make it so.

So no numbers were crunched before? no data, or unknown what maxed would be?

And with the numbers crunched now are they equal or a little under to see if they're sand bagging?

Time to step it up to maxed spec?

Just asking.

Good luck Derrick, I'm sure you'll do well, Go Mazda !!!

Sound like a good luck to you too, Jim.

So how many classes you going to run this years?

Bspec is evolving. All the best efforts to keep the cars close, but rules tweaks will be more common until we get the rules as close as possible. Would love to leave the Mazda out front, but the data absolutely did not support that. With the benefit of World Challenge data and Kevin Fandozzi's access to the data and his position on the CRB means that we have more access to meaningful data than ever before in any other class.

As far as me.. I would like to find a good T4 MX5 or a Bspec to run. I have an exemption, but have not actively pursued a third ride although it has been in my mind for sure. I am qualified in SM and STL, so I could use my exemption elsewhere. If anyone has any leads... let me know

I was expecting something to come up, another 50 lbs not 100.  That is alot in a 2 month period.

We will see how it goes with the extra weight.

Yeah I must be crazy driving one at the runoffs.  The even crazier part is I qualified to run STL as well in the Mazda 2.  I need a 500 lbs of ballast when running between the two different groups now, lol

I ran the 2 at Thunderhill this past weekend, not so good.  The 100 lbs are going to be a killer going up the hill at RA and we are going to have to be glued to the back end of the minis and fits to not get lost on the main straight.

Most of the Bspec guys have not even maxed the specs in the engines.

So what does a "pro" B-SPEC motor (Honda, Mazda, Mini, Kia, etc.) go for these days? $5k? $6k? $7k?

These are supposed to be stock motors to keep costs down, right? B-SPEC is supposed to be affordable racing, right? If so, why aren't these motors sealed?

Haha. C'mon, Todd, this place is kinda quiet lately and Jim D needs the website traffic. :)

Seriously, as someone who's kind of a n00b to all this, what's wrong with sealed motors? Other race series (including SSM in the SCCA SFR) seem to have good results from sealing motors. At least that's what I've been led to believe. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I guess I'm just tired of seeing race series that are touted as "affordable racing" and then the arms race takes off and we see $30-40k SMs, Pro3 cars, Spec E30s, and God knows what top B-SPEC cars go for. That's hardly affordable for the regular Joes and Janes out there. Everytime I see this, it makes ChumpCar/Lemons racing more appealing. Heck, they even have better prizes!
