I was on the SMAC in 2009 and I don't agree with Jim...

I think there are basically a bunch of people crying because they used a blunt tool to do an artisans job and they can't go back and do a better job because they have already butchered the material.

The rule is fine as written and what is currently being done with the radius cut is perfectly legal (for now until cronyism on the CRB fixes it).  There is no rule in the GCR that one engine builder cannot be smarter than another.  Our class already has closer fields and finishes than any "SPEC" class in the SCCA.....

Flame away... been sitting on the sidelines watching but this is starting to get so deep the boots wouldn't cut it and I don't feel like putting the wadders on...

In the spirit of accuracy from Sunday's VIR Majors (adjusted by dropping fastest and slowest competitor)

SRF3: margin of victory 0.074 seconds, lap delta - fastest to slowest ~ 1.6 seconds

SM: margin of victory 4.09 seconds, lap delta - fastest to slowest 8+ seconds

Oh it is funny how we can skew facts to fit our own agenda...  As long as we are cherry picking the facts to fit our cases...

How about from Sundays grid, the top 25 cars

Sm separated by 2 seconds, SRF3 separated by 10.5    :noidea:

Who's the cherrypicker?

Why just the top 25 SMs when there were 42 SMs entered?

Are you including SRF3 and SRF? Except for one outlier Sunday's SRF3 grid had a delta of approx. 4.4 seconds, 2:08.4 to 2:12.8. Even adding in the slowest SRF3 at 2:16.6 yields a delta of 8.2 seconds.

I understand that promoting SM is good business - I just have an allergic reaction to hype.

Than you should stop spreading it? :)

SRF3 is more comparable to pro SM.  So take the top 10,15, or top 25% or whatever comfortable with?  What is that delta? that is the most "realistic" comparison. I haven't even looked but I bet it supports SM case? There are no "regional" type SRF3 guys. Mostly all seasoned racers, most the best of SRF that have moved "up" to SRF3. So I would say more similar to the top "x" in SM, not top to bottom.

SM was a much closer battle with more cars. I was paying close attention to SRF3 as one of my coaching clients was in the front pack. They have their own drama going on right now because with the split start the SRF3 caught the lead SRF cars in Oak Tree while both groups were battling for the lead in the closing laps. At least their drama is about what happened on-track....

Exactly, hence no arguments about full prep or not, pro-built or not, allowable machining variations, engine builder "creativity", generational differences, etc...

A SRF is a SRF is a SRF

SM not so much.

As usual I think you are confusing driver parity with car parity.
Yes we have several different models to chose from but the parity between models gets closer with every year that goes by, unfortunately the 1.6 driven by a regional driver with regional prep will never be able to compete with the top 10 at a well attended Major.

And "as usual" you're making my point for me. The biggest problem with SM, and the one I wish the SCCA/NASA would deal with by tightening specs is that a $40,000 car is vastly superior to a $10,000 car.

Well duh, you might say. To which I would say shouldn't the point of a spec class be to have totally equal equipment, rather than "specish"

Is there a "regional prep" SRF3?

First it was MX5 cup or SRF , I don't remember which...

Then SM5

Then B Spec a few weeks ago

Now SRF3...

Maybe it will circle around back to SM? :)

Maybe these Eutopia type classes are raced where they make the widgets? Your opinions of those classes mirror the video below.

Ok.  So I race you in my 15k 1.6 build and I still kick your ass by a second a lap is it the cars fault, did I spend too much on the car?  You cant build a car for 10k that wins, you never freaking could against a the top guys in the country.  You know why, because those sorry bastards would spend 3k in tires for the weekend just to beat your ass that won't spend 3k a year on tires.  If you don't like the sport or the class get the F' out of it.  In case nobody told you, this shit is expensive no matter how "spec" the class it will always be expensive.  Chump car or similar is the place you ought to spend your money.  You and another group of guys can cheat up a 2k miata and look like rock stars.

Woe upon they who do not drink the SM Kool-Aid.

Why is it not possible to disagree on this website without being subject to personal attacks?

I'll leave the remaining dozen visitors to ponder that.

You drank and continue to drink the Kool-Aid because you know the other classes are no better and like to stir the pitcher of Kool-Aid as well.

because it is an internet forum, try roadraceautox.com if you want to really get personally attacked   :)

Walter please find a class that meets your criteria, I suggest IT(x) if you love the SCCA.  You could do PTE in NASA, or Chump car is a great alternative.  Nobody can put the genie back in the bottle and make your fantasy of a 10k car competing at the highest level happen.  You keep pointing to SRF as the holy grail of Spec racing and those poor guys have been forced to buy new cars.  At least you get to keep racing yours.

It is possible to disagree, if you say something stupid, I point it out.  If you call that personal attack then you don't know how to argue your point.  If I called you ugly, that would be a personal attack as you can do nothing about how you look.

The visitors are in here for the entertainment more than the racing content.  If we didn't have our little chats they wouldn't know that you race and consider driver parity more of an issue than car parity.

How 'bout we ask Mazda to make a spec head for each generation and make it effective 1-1-16 that only that head is compliant. All machine work is identical, no manufacturing variation, no engine builder tricks.

Any discovery of tampering with the spec head results in 2 year suspension from SM competition.

Wait, there was this one.  Everyone buy new heads that will fix everything.  I'm not sure where that fits into the 10k formula.

Sorry Walter just piling on here :deadhorse:

You keep pointing to SRF as the holy grail of Spec racing and those poor guys have been forced to buy new cars.

Please remember we all mostly come here because were bored and it's a place to chat with equals, Spec Miata owners/drivers.

Back to your comment above, your words, "been forced to buy  new cars" is a  :bs: comment. If they choose to play at the pointy end of SRF Gen3, they are required to procure a new engine package which fits the original transmission/engine mounts. Erik and colleagues designed the Gen3 package so the SRF owners were not required to dump their old cars and start with new cars. :duck:
