I don't have a trailer and I'm looking to pick one up. The car doesn't need to be street able unless I can't find a trailer I guess.
I saw that 1.6 you linked to but again, I'm kind of shying away from those.

Reasonable? - No.
I could list a bunch of qualifiers for my statement but in trying to answer respecting what I think you are asking........... no.
What should I expect to spend?

20K + for the car I think you want.
15K + for a car that has the potential to run in the front HALF of a good field with a top driver in it.

We've been talking to you for a couple weeks now. Have you learned anything, gone to a track/event, learned the different classes and clubs ?
Do you need a lic. ?
Mike may be able to help. He's got soup to nuts, rent to own and could help you get through drivers school, if that's the case.

Have license, familiar with clubs, just have yet to see a spec miata in person. Been trying to arrange that with purchases and also have DE events coming up where I will be renting from a guy local to me so I can get some seat time.
The NASA Nationals (East coast end of year championships) will be held the weekend of Sept. 22nd thru 25th. Get to that track and start some real learning about Spec Miata. Or look for other road races in your area. Put as some might say harshly but to beeing very truthful, very clearly, you don't seem to have much of a grip on Spec Miata cars to say nothing about your being prepared to buy a car. Get to a track and don't be in a big a$$ hurry to buy a car. LEARN, LEARN and LEARN more before buying. On the other hand, if money was your middle name buy a car with little knowledge to serve your, I need it now attitude. If the car is a POS sell it at a loss and buy another car.

Treat this like buying any used car. Know what you want, what you would like, and what is wrong (in our case illegal). The lowest prices are from individuals. But the car will probably not be race ready. And any changes/upgrades will be on your dime and your time. Buying from a shop (like me, OPM, Flat out etc) will give you a certain surity that the car is race ready and you can negotiate for some changes/upgrades. Example; the seat does not fit you. An individual seller probably does not have a seat to fit you. While the shop may have one on the shelf that they can swap out. Be vary carefull with the "internet deals". I know of a car that the chassis was bent in half that sold at least twice on the internet.
Get to know the SM guru near you. He probably knows every car within 500 miles. His advice can be priceless.
Within the next few days I will be putting many of my cars up for sale. I currently own 9 racecars and 5 donors. I need to thin the herd. None meet your price point but it will give you a good idea on what to expect.

It's pronounced "Mike"
We're going over the same material again, "have you looked at SSM ??" (which is the lowest cost and really good racing)

Well yeah, that's why I'm perusing cars for sale. So I can start checking out cars in person. It's not like I'm going to plop money on the first car I come across (unless it's the right one). I'd just like to go look at a car I have a possibility of buying and checking out things up close.
Qyxz, have you considered SSM? Robust fields in your area and fits your budget. $12,000 SM is not going to finish in top half at a Majors unless you're the next Senna.
By the way, how do you pronounce"Qyxz?" I'm going to take a stab, is it "kicks?"
From what I have seen SSM is not very popular around here. Plus, as others have suggested, I've linked up with a local SM guy who can help give me some pointers as I go along.

Thanks that will help. I have indeed gotten to know the SM guru near me, and we're looking at cars as far out as WI! Gives you an idea of the slim pickings around here...

I don't think there is a single individual in our regional race group that doesn't have a "race ready" car. If they choose to sell you their car you would be buying a very decent car and it would meet your criteria for performance. Maybe there is a bunch of shoddy individual cars back east.
You can buy some ugly cars from individuals out here. I have one of them. But if I sold it to you it is race ready or it is sold to you stating it is not race ready.
Daves statement is akin to saying that you can only buy a good car from a dealer. Yes the dealer can add in options that an individual can't. But there are advantages from buying from an individual that a dealer can't provide...... IMO
You guru will be able to protect you from buying a potentially bad car from an individual. So I am clear; I am not saying that you shouldn't buy from a shop. I just disagree that that is your only option to find a "race ready" car. That statement feels kind of insulting to me as an individual that spends as much time as Dave does in my shop on a per car basis trying to put on track the best car I can.

Well here's the DC Region
Check out SM, run group 5 and then look at SSM in run group 3
http://marrspoints.c....jsp?race_id=29
You'd think SSM would have there own run group and SM gets stuck with the ITA guys. (not that there's any wrong with ITA guys)
I wonder if there would be more double dippers (run 2 groups) if SSM had there own and then could run ITA. More $$ for the club
Just sayin

Mike, a bunch of years ago I rented a Spec Miata for a double race weekend as I was starting to lear/understand the Spec Miata. The drivers side protection tubes were so close to my left arm, I could hardly use my left arm for driving. My friken elbow would bang into and get jamed between the side protection tube and the seat. One of the many items to be aware of when buying or building. I'm a normal sized guy at 5 ft 10 inches and 210 popunds.
