...the SCCA classing rule includes a 180 pound driver...

You said there was a rule, please quote it

WHAT, neither Mr. Gomberg or Topeka accept text messages?

Being that your not going to _ _ _ up on this subject I'm :wave2:

David -

It appears there is no rule in the GCR. I believe the appropriate response to Drago is "I was mistaken. I thought that 180 pounds was cited in the rules but as it turns out it is simply a rule of thumb the SCCA uses. I researched the topic back when I was on a one-man witch hunt to prove you were an underhanded SOB, bending the rules to fit your own physique."

I do not need a chart on my wt if I can see my shoes I'm good.

I went back and read some archived posts from feb 2010 and the big talk then was the issue of ECU's and the consequences. if you get caught cheating. It appears that the response to that ultimately was to allow you to advance the timing and regulate fuel pressure.

JIM D

Is it likely that this is the final fix or do you see them considering going to an Open ECU at some point??

I realize that the ECU flash at this point is not that much of an advantage but it is an advantage, and we have discussed that its not that practical to come up with a test that can be done on a wide spread basis, so do we leave it where it is or open it up?

I think making the standard driver weight for classing cars fit the 85th or 95th % a great idea. After that we can lobby to make basketball hoops 8 feet high because the 50% male can't dunk. Outfield fences can be moved to 30 feet behind 2nd base for people cant hit and a mile can be changed to 200 yards so most almost everyone can run one in 4 minutes. :whistling:

Discussions still going on to determine an inexpensive way to test these and how much of a problem it really is etc? I really don't have a conclusive answer at this time.

Steve, I well know the 180 pounds was/IS not in the SCCA GCR.

Anyone that makes the Topeka call will get the same response that I received. Simple deal, but no callers. It's easier to :spin: stuff on this site.

On the other hand, this thread would be only 5 pages long without the weight posts.:wave2:

If those other activities were desperately in need of more players in order to continue to exist at all, maximizing their draw might be in their interest. Or, put another way, as long as you don't mind SM racing (and perhaps amateur racing as a whole) vaporizing entirely, make it as exclusive as you like.

How? The title is "(dinner) plates and weights". Seems like we're right on target. :P

Why would we discuss anything in this thread if the rules are locked? Probably because it is snowing outside and we can't race is why. If you are in a region where it is still warm and sunny, no idea why'd you be here.

My quarrel is not with Disney. My quarrel is with the typical salt infested American, including me :) It's a sad statement when we're sinking boats at a theme park.

Guilty as charged. :sorry:

Although, in my defense, I'll add that my last 15 pounds can be attributed directly to medication prescribed to prevent other maladies. Somehow "Get fat or die" just isn't a satisfying choice, regardless of the outcome. :(

My comment has nothing to do with exclusivity, Jim. It's about not setting rules to fit the least common denominator. Racing and sports in general are inherently unfair. There are haves and have-nots in a variety of areas be it free time, money, knowledge, physical proportions, or natural ability. Some people are blessed with ample proportions of all the above. Others sacrifice and work on one or another of those (some of us most of them). Maybe it's a slippery slope argument but if we were to extend the "increase the nominal weight to include 85 or 95% of the population" to other things, we'd all be dyno tested and sealed at 80 hp, no on-track testing would be allowed, everyone runs identical setups, we all have to use crappy take off tires, and your skill level determines how many fingers you're allowed to use. Essentially we pick the color horse we like on the merry-go-round and when the music stops and the ponies stop going up and down we have a group hug. That will make racers evaporate too because it takes the competitive part out of it and racers are competitive by nature.

So why do we have this entry-level class at all? Do we not have it because the rest of the racing world is financially unavailable to most? Does this class not exist specifically to allow a greater number of people to race? I mean, if you take your your view, most of us couldn't race at all, our entire lives! You included, I expect. We try to keep our racing expenses down for good reason, and that reason is precisely to enable more of us to race.

A sincere Thank You to the smac and crb members for honestly trying to do the right thing.
This is a step in the right direction and I think if people give it a real shot, they might be surprised how close this ruleset is to being what we need.
Thanks again

It's an entry level class that provides the opportunity to race at a national level. That to me means it is up to you how serious you want to take things. I can't afford to compete at the national level let alone the runoffs level. I have other stuff competing for my money and time. Others will sacrifice that. I'm not making them the villain for it or me the victim. I'm going to have fun regardless and try to maximize my strengths and minimize my weaknesses. That simple.

I'm also not going to support rules that minimize everyone's weaknesses. You have strengths I don't. I have strengths you don't. Part of my job developing myself as a driver is figuring out how to capitalize off my strengths and your weaknesses. Where can I focus my efforts to gain an edge? Take that out of the equation and it's the veterans get the rules revolving around themselves and so much for the "entry level" class once again.
