The question is what is a reasonable target weight that will encompass the majority (95th percentile?) of drivers?

I agree, that's the question. For most things that try to accommodate a range of people, 85th percentile seems standard. I'd be quite happy with that (and no, I don't know what weight that is, but I'd agree to it in advance). I'd guess that 180 would be about 45th percentile for adult males.

Here's a chart of weight versus age by percentile. http://www.halls.md/...en-weight-w.htm

To use your suggested 95%, assuming white males about age 50, you'd be looking at 255 pounds. My suggested 85% isn't listed, but looks to be about 235 pounds. 180 pounds is remarkably close to my guess of 45th percentile. So when people want to use 180 pounds as the target weight, they're saying that 65% of drivers will not make weight. I call that self-serving in the extreme.

The weights and plates for the cars have been decided guys. we live with it now for 3 years, why are we still talking about this? It's not like there is someone listening and thinking about making a change based on this fodder. We have all winter to lighten ourselves or our cars, build a more powerful engine, bulk ourselves up or get balast made, and get ready for another racing season. :chillpill:

Using "new math" I get 1-.45=.55 or 55%.

But I agree. I like the 85th percentile as more representative.

As someone said yesterday, that's ^ the "line of the day for me so far". :scratchchin:

That BMI chart is from about 5 years ago. BMI is not the yardstick it was once thought to be. I've been discussing this with my GP, internal med doc and cardiologist. The last time was on Monday when they ran me through the latest and greatest cardiac/vascular CT scanner. The issue with BMI is that it only takes into account a small percentage of the median class and as I stated earlier does not take into account frame size, muscle mass, bone density or physical attributes related to ethnicity. For example BMI charts need to be revised specifically for Asians or those of Asian decent. Waist size to height is becoming the yardstick for measuring appropriate body size.

The average US male weight is closer to 200# than 180, even in a fit adult. Since BMI charts were introduced we've gotten taller and larger framed. That's not to say we're in great shape, many of us aren't though I'm doing my part now with a medically supervised diet and will resume training once I get the green light from the cardiologist. I'll get back down to 250 or so which for me is svelte, but I don't advocate using that weight. I also don't think 180# as an average for the class is realistic either. I see 200-210 as a more realistic metric.

according to this, I'm supposed to weigh 179 pounds. When I was 188 I looked the F'n crypt keeper. I'm built like a linebacker, not a kicker. I may be a bit out of shape, nut the only way I get to 179 is with part of me missing(possibly two parts).

That being said, since growing a foot taller is out of the question, having my mouth removed might be a benefit( to myself as well as others). Next topic...

How? The title is "(dinner) plates and weights". Seems like we're right on target. :P

why are we still talking about this?

Why would we discuss anything in this thread if the rules are locked? Probably because it is snowing outside and we can't race is why. If you are in a region where it is still warm and sunny, no idea why'd you be here.

Holy smokes have we supersized ourselves. Look at Table 6.

BMI is a horribly crude metric. When I am running for exercise, my gut shrinks and I get heavier, not lighter.

You said there was a rule, please quote it

Dr. :spin: , please call one of your partners on the CRB by the name of Dave Gomberg (he gave me the info a year or two ago) & then call SCCA Topeka, KS & ask both Dave & Topeka what is the drivers weight used by the SCCA when classing cars. Simple task, no more, no less, then post the responses you get.

The BMI is garbage. It routinely shows people who are really fit as overweight. A better reference weight might be the industry standard anthropomorphic dummies. Transportation stuff is often sized to fit the body dimensions from the 5% female to the 95% male. Crash testing often uses just the 50% male weight at 172 lbs but the 95% "heavy male" dummy weight is 223 lbs.

rev limiter! rev limiter! rev limiter! rev limiter! rev limiter! Oh, is that off topic? Or should I find something to bitch about that I can't change like going back to a 45mm restrictor plate from a 47mm just when our car got a little help this year??? And how the f****k am I going to take 15lbs out of 1 of the 2 50lbs weights we have bolted to the floor??? I might even lose sleep over this one Jim...it's all your fault! :shoot: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:
