Jason I commend your efforts. Wish more younger folks had the quest for learning / challenges.

When you take away money and a girlfriend, add some ambition with basic tools things get interesting real quick.

For those interested in more info - the drill method works surprising well. The surface finish is comparable to the big boy methods. We ended up pulling the threads out in the homemade valve taper tool and decided to move on. The relief and plunge cut are easy to do; perfect valve jobs are tougher without the proper tools...

The upgraded equipment includes a .005" taper valve guide pins. The intake works well with a .236" base diameter but the exhaust side needs something slightly larger like a .238" pin. Things are stalled until we get the new pin for the exhaust.

5 hours.  That includes:  Strip the engine bay of all the parts, unclip the harness, remove headlights, etc etc. Then wash with a rag and water.  Then mask everything off.  Then wipe down with solvent.  Then prep the paint gun, spray, cleanup.

I think it was worth the time investment, will look pretty sharp once everything is reassembled.  Will just have to make sure not to spill brake fluid  :)

I did a second coat on certain areas after the first had tacked up.  The second coat wanted to orange peel.  Is that a big no-no when spraying paint, aka spraying again before the first coat has fully dried?  Novice painter here.

Tom no idea if your right or not, really don't care. Just love when people contradict Ralph :) Get him started on Mig Vs Tig welding some day :)

I generally keep my mouth shut when I don't know what I'm talking about.  :-)

At the time I bought my FatCats G-Glue was still in the procedure.  I thought it was an odd choice of adhesive (I don't like it for woodworking projects, either), but trusted the MFG advice.  That said, I did apply appropriate clamping pressure.  And they are still going strong, 4 years in.

Looks good.  I can't recall anyone ever being criticized for under hood paint that had some orange peel.  Great work and a great thread.

I'm a novice painter as well but the old man and my gramps were life long industrial/commercial painters.  I worked with them over some summers as a kid.  Enough to know there was no way in hell I wanted to paint for a living.

The material usually has instructions for a second coat on the container or data sheet.  Orange peel is high spots on the paint.  It's due to application technique or equipment settings more than anything.  Once the paint drys the fix with auto paint is wet sanding.  Rustoleum should be similar but if it's under the hood I'd leave it and move on.

I generally keep my mouth shut when I don't know what I'm talking about.  :-)

Strictly speaking its called "the internets".

I found that I significantly reduced my odds of getting orange peel with my under-the-hood job, by not paining it.

I have experienced that on several occasions when the temp is below about 72f and the item being painted is colder than the paint.

Likewise, I have experienced it when the thing I wanted to paint was in front of my spray can!

I'm so still on budget.  I'm gonna have to take some money off the total, now that I'm using $8 paint instead of $100 paint!

Could be part of the problem.  I had the temperature set in the low 60's.  Though, the paint was the same temp as the car.

Pay attention to grounds. I worked on a car this weekend with a repainted engine compartment. Ground connection points were painted over/in and not cleaned before reattaching.
