I’m posting to see would be interested in a Spec Miata bullring race series. I live near Wake County Speedway in Raleigh, NC. The track runs a nice program of Friday night racing during the summer. I’ve been to several events – they put on a good show and they are well attended.

I’ve been speaking with the owner and he would love to hold a Spec Miata series. Entry fees are typically $35 - $45 depending on the event and there may be potential for a purse. Could be good.

Who would be interested? There’s a lot of details to work out but I’m thinking SM GCR rules, NA and NB cars, maybe 10-12 cars max per heat, open alignment adjustment but no short track ringers. (nothing would f this up quicker than cheaters)

I’d especially like to connect with SM racers in the Raleigh/Triangle area. Thanks, Denny

You guys have a bunch of short tracks in your area. Ace is outside Burlington, Orange County at Durham/Roxboro, South Boston Speedway, S Boston, Va. and Southern National at Kinley near Wilson, NC. You could make a series out of it. I have contacts at all these tracks if interested. Bump your entry fee up to $75 and have a nice little purse. Scales always there and just tell local tech guy what you want checked and it will get done. They line you up before qualifying and check them. Weight after race. Lot's of fun and not much wasted time. Most open at 5 PM. A couple of practices, a qualifying and 50 lap race. Out by 10 PM. Why not race your car more often and have some extra fun? And there is real potential for a sponsor. The SM guys ran Lanier Speedway across from Road Atlanta and had a blast. Not one car damaged.

I'm sure the SM guys are fine, but what happens when the local Ricky Bobby decides to pick up a craigslist Miata to make the big move up from spectator stock?

I'm thinking Ricky would have to build to SM rules. I'm also thinking there should be strict racing room rules for this series

At most local circle track all the classes are much behaved than I've seen at SCCA SM events.  There is no protest, no contact meeting, you just get sent home.  There won't be any interest from circle track guys.  By the time you get a donor and build it to SM or get a used car you're way more into it than if you went a traditional circle car route.  For the cost of building even a cheap SM or buying used you can get a pretty good street stock or even low end late model.  For what a Drago car costs you could run a late model touring series or even K&N.  Circle track racers have more, better options than a Miata for car that can be raced at many tracks most of the time with a purse and contingency.

For the SM guys with cars already it's a good idea.  One bummer is a bad call in a turn and you're into the fence.  That's going to tear up a Miata pretty easily.

Frank, sadly CMS is permanently closed, however Mansfield Speedway is a short hop from Mid-Ohio.

AND they may or may not have been intoxicated! Also may or may not have had something other than water in their drink tubes! :D

UPDATE: Wake County Speedway Spec Miata bullring racing.

I met with the track owner this morning and he proposed a free test session mid-November or early December. I need five or six SM racers willing to participate. Available dates are on Saturdays, either Nov. 11 or 18, or December 2 or 9. Who is interested and which date works for you?

The owner is serious about holding an oval series for SMs. We need driver's participation to make it happen.
