Setting Diff Backlash and Preload

Posted by FTodaro in Starting from Scratch New VVT build, 12-23-2015 - * * * * * · 15,512 views

I bought the tools years ago and never jumped into learning how to Lash a diff and set the preload on the carrier bearings. This is not a full blown rebuild. I did not change the Pinion bearings. I simply swapped out an open diff and put a Torsen unit in it. So I reused the all the bearings and the original ring and pinion.
I will endeavor to do the entir...

Final Entry

Posted by Adax in Alan's OCD '03 SM buid, 09-05-2014 - - - - - - · 4,742 views

I'm sorry for the delay in wrapping up this build blog. There are a number of reasons for the delay but the main one is that I broke my right arm and ruptured a tendon in my thumb snowboarding. Recovery has been quite long and not having use of my right hand has impacted all aspects of personal and professional daily life. Fortunately I have a excellent s...

LOOKING FOR ADVICE

Posted by redhot400 in redhot400's Blog, 07-01-2013 - - - - - - · 4,294 views

At 67 years old one of my bucket list items was road racing, so I immediately went out found myself a 14K low mileage 05 Z51 C6 Vette and spent 10K on 500 RWHP, brakes, wheels and tires. Now after 6 HPDE track days under my belt, two of which are solo I've come to a sinister realization. I can NOT afford this sport with the car I have cause I can't afford...

Running Both Sanctioning Bodies.... SCCA here we come....

Posted by Joe (dad) Jordan in The Jordan's race Blog, 06-06-2013 - - - - - - · 3,707 views

We decided it was time to try SCCA racing in November we went to Firebird raceway and competed in a SCCA regional. We ran Spec Miata and STL to make sure he would get enough races to get a National license. Our intention was to run SCCA Nationals with the hope to qualify for the 50th SCCA Runoffs.   Unfortunately not much Spec Miata competition at the Fir...

The Saga Begins

Finding him was the will of the Force, I have no doubt of that. - Qui-Gon Jinn  So I wrecked my 1.6 a month ago. I wish it was just me doing something stupid and going four-off and smacking a wall or something but no... I had to be making a rather ordinary pass in a regular passing zone when my master cylinder decided to take a crap. Yep, it was kinda big...

Alignment jig and first alignment

Posted by Tom Hampton in Tom Hampton Local Blog, 06-14-2012 - - - - - - · 4,036 views

So, I made my own alignment jig.  Its a clone of a well known string setup.  These brackets hang off of the inner trunk and hood lips.  Their whole point is to hang a bar down at axel height at the front and rear of the car.  The bars are designed to have grooves on the ends to hold a string.  The grooves are exactly the same width in the front and rear...

Finally driving again, & second thoughts on instructing

Posted by davecarama in davecarama's Blog, 05-23-2012 - - - - - - · 3,736 views

Turned out (if you followed the thread on Mazda Racers) that it was indeed the lifters. After I got the car together, it idled for about 30 minutes (we were burping the coolant). It took the entire 30 min to quiet the lifters. Once that was all done. Car was perfect. Right where you would want a leak down... and quite nice compression numbers too  :)So I...

Finished

Posted by Tyler Dahl in Transmission notch panel install, 02-12-2012 - - - - - - · 4,066 views

I decided to fully weld the panel in place. There is alot to spot weld but I feel more comfortable with it being welded in. I'm going to weld the underside as well just to make sure it is solid. It takes less then 30 minutes to get it fitted but then it took me alittle longer to weld it in and then clean it up. With the panel installed it allows alot...

2002 SM build

Posted by Jim Drago in Jim Drago's Blog, 12-13-2011 - * * * * * · 6,954 views

12/13  After seeing a few 2001 up cars running pretty strong, we decided to throw our hat in and try one as well. Naturally, I think we can do better, just like everyone else :) This was a very straight and clean donor. Came from the north ( Chicago), so a little surface rust and sub frame rust on the bottom, but overall, very clean and very straight. Wil...

As you can tell Chris knows what he is doing

Posted by MPR22 in Another Chris Haldeman creation in the works, 11-28-2011 - - - - - - · 3,921 views

Chris worked so hard on this car.  I can't thank him enough, since JP3 finished the build a year ago I wanted to paint it. JP3 made me hold off until I got another season under my belt and he was spot on.  The only part of the car that didn't get damaged was the rear deck.   You can see on some of the photos we didn't repair everything to like...

The First Race

Posted by Elliott Skeer in SkeerRacing's Blog, 04-10-2011 - - - - - - · 4,137 views

I had woken up in the exact same spot many times before. Same bed in the same motorhome, in the same pits at Buttonwillow Raceway. Except this time I wasn’t walking out of the motorhome and looking at a go kart, but a Spec Miata. That’s when it hit me that after 8 months of prepwork on both the car and myself, the day had finally arrived, my first Spec Mi...

Where we are at today

Posted by JayF in Jay's 96 SM Build, 12-24-2010 - - - - - - · 4,271 views

So I have uploaded the pictures I've got so far.  I pulled the old motor out, cleaned up the engine bay and resprayed it.  I am using Krylon Gloss gray spray for the engine bay and interior per a recommendation by Planet Miata.  So far it has worked out great.  I replaced all of the common M6x1 10mm bolts on the car with all new hardware to clean thin...
